This is so close to baseball’s version of showing up to spring training in “the best shape of my life” it makes me yearn for my other favorite sport. But for the moment, watching David Montgomery put in offseason work will have to suffice.

Whenever football returns, Montgomery figures to be a key cog in the Bears’ offensive plans. And sure, we thought that last year, too. But this year is a bit different. As things stand, Montgomery is the undisputed lead back and in a position to take on more than a lion’s share of the carries. There is no Mike Davis to vulture rushing attempts early in the season. Nor does Tarik Cohen project to be the type of rusher who gets a traditional running back workload. Therefore, the ball is in Montgomery’s court. This is his time to shine.
And if Chicago’s offense moves toward an increase in usage of “12” personnel with two tight ends, Montgomery as the lone running back makes a lot of sense asܫ being someone who is the focal point of the attack.
