Ted Phillips, Ryan Pace, and Matt Nagy Will All Be Back Next Year

They’re baaaaaack!

Wednesday’s press conference featuring Chairman George McCaskey, President Ted Phillips, GM Ryan Pace, and Head Coach Matt Nagy confirmed the Chicago Bears were running it back with the top guys in charge. In other words, the same crew that brought you the 2020 Bears will bring you the 2021 squad.

That’s certainly a decision.

The Bears are retaining a GM whose team is 42-54 in his six years running the show. And while making the postseason twice in three years is an accomplishment for a franchise that has been to the postseason just 11 times in the last 35 years, it’s simply not good enough for a charter franchise of the NFL. The bar should definitely be higher than what it is, but it isn’t.

Chicago is also bringing back a hea💞d coach who was hired to unlock a once highly touted q🔯uarterback prospect and bring the offense into the 21st century. Instead, the quarterback position remains largely unsolved and the offense has taken major steps back in each of the last two seasons.

Neither has received an extension, which means the Bears are going⭕ for broke in 2021.

And then there’s the team president, whose résumé includes being the overseer of … 15 teams finishing at or below .500, 10 losing seasons, and a grand total of 3 playoff wins in 21 years. So while Phillips doesn’t make football decisions, it’s impossible to understand why a President/CEO gets to stick around after two decades of mostly losing football.

There’s a lot to slice through here. And we’ll have more for you as they finish up the press conferences.
