Not that you disregard the national reports on stories like this, but when the local reporting – from the folks most deeply tied to an organization and with a range of contacts therein – starts to match the national reporting, you really know something is brewing.
Today, Bob McGinn, who covers the Green Bay Packers for The Athletic, joined ESPN’s Rob Demovsky in chronicling the depths of the rift between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, and while he didn’t put a 5%-chance-of-a-return on the thing, .
also added considerably more color to how bad things have gotten between Rodgers and the organization, and specifically GM Brian Gutekunst, whom Rodgers reportedly wants fired. For example, this humorous (come on, it’s funny) bit:
According to sources, Rodgers has mocked Gut🌳ekunst in group chats with his teammates in Green Bay by r꧟eferring to the GM as Jerry Krause. The late Krause, the general manager of the Chicago Bulls during their run of six NBA championships, was loathed by Michael Jordan for some personnel moves with which Jordan disagreed.
Of course, until it was teardown time, at least Krause helped surround Jordan with winnable pieces …
I kid, kinda, but ultimately the point here is that Rodgers has not been shy about his discontent. This isn’t a situation where there are whispers and rumors and innuendo. Rodgers wants out, period, and as his friend told McGinn: “Once he gets something in his head, he usually doesn’t back down.”
Read McGinn’s piece for so much more of the behind-the-scenes on how things are going for the Packers right now if you’re looking for more schadenfreude.
