“He Doesn’t Want to Be There”

Adam Schefter put us all on high alert in April, when he reported Aaron Rodgers’ discontent with the Packers hours before the 2021 NFL Draft.

And the drama of the 76 day🌜s since has been a joy to follow ever since.

There have been reports of Rodgers (1) telling his teammates he isn’t coming back, (2) wanting GM Brian Gutekunst to get the boot, (3) before referring to him “Jerry Krause” (and not in a good way!), and playing coy and non-committal when speaking publicly. And it’s not only him.

Star teammate Davante Adams, in the final year of his contract, said he’d have to do “some extra thinking” about sticking around if Rodgers isn’t throwing the ball. Jordan Love isn’t pushing Rodgers out the door, buuuuuut he’s “definitely ready” to start Week 1 if it comes to it. And because it’s not an organizational drama until the bosses get involved, President Mark Murphy found new ways to make th♎at whole situation awkward.

I find myself wondering what Schefter — whose reporting put this ball into motion — has to say about the situation. After all, we are just weeks from training camps opening aro𓆉und the league.

Well, sometimes when you ask, you receive:

In his discussion with Cris Collinsworth, Schefter makes it clear that – from what he is hearing – that Rodgers doesn’t want to return to Green Bay.

It doesn’t get much clearer than that, especially since that has been Schefter’s stance from the get-go. I suppose this issue here is that the Packers aren’t in a position to push Rodgers out the door. Not after winning the league’s MVP last season. And certainly not when Green Bay was painfully close to reaching the Super Bowl. All that, plus Love being a total wild-card and unknown, makes all of this so juicy from an outside perspective.

Or put it in a different light. If Love was ready to take over, wouldn’t Green Bay want to cash in on a trade haul? Just asking.

Schefter and Collinsworth go through a bunch on this podcast episode. Obviously, the Rodgers stuff is at top of mind. But there’s even some worthwhile non-Rodgers stuff. So, if you want to hear more, I would encourage you to do so:
