There It Is: Bears Reportedly Hiring Matt Eberflus as New Head Coach

When the Chicago Bears announced that interviews with Dan Quinn and Matt Eberflus had come to a conclusion, the thought crossed my mind that even more interviews could be on the ꦓhorizon. But maybe the team just needed to sleep on it, because a decision has reportedly been made: Matt Eberflus will be the next head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Eberflus, 51, has been the Colts DC since 2018 and has put together some nice units in Indy. He also has a coaching history that includes time coaching Cowboys linebackers (2011-17), Browns linebackers (2009-10), and running the defense at Missouri (2001-08). It is an interesting profil🔜e, to say the least. Surely, intriguing enough to (1) get a second interview with the Bears and (2) get the head-coaching gig after just one interview with new GM Ryan Poles.

Here’s a snippet from our Getting to Know series on Eberflus:

Even though hiring defensive-leaning assistants for head coaching jobs isn’t en vogue right now, it doesn’t mean the right hire for the Bears can’t be one. After all, Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin began coaching as defensive assistants. As did Brandon Staley, whose coaching star is generally seen as being on the rise. In other words, let’s not weed anyone out simply because of their coaching background.

There will be so much to comb through moving forward. All I know is that he better have a killer plan for his offensive coordinator/quarterback coach tandem. And it better set up Justin Fields to be successful from the get-go. Otherwise, I fear we’ll be on obsessive coach hunt four or five years from now.

More coming on the new head coach.
