MNF Mayhem, Blame Canada, Nagy Nonsense, Remembering Sid Luckman, and Other Bears Bullets

I usually try to do Bears Bullets before my Tuesday morning therapy session. But, today, I felt like I wanted to try something different. ▨So the result of me mixing it up is the following set of Bears Bullets.

  • that he lost sleep after whiffing on a potential pick-six in what turned out to be a painful loss to the Lions in Week 11. Hey, man. That makes two of us.
  • In a notable bit of news that might pique the interest of Bears fans: The Steelers have fired Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada. I don’t want (or need) to get too deep down this rabbit hole, but it is worth pointing out that quarterback Kenny Pickett might not be good. And between Pickett’s limitations and Canada’s shortcomings as a play caller, the OC’s dismissal felt inevitable. And yet, this is a unique situation as . I’m sure reading that last sentence will catch the attention of Bears fans.
  • While the Eagles got football’s version of a pound of flesh in their Super Bowl revenge win against the Chiefs on Monday Night Football, Bears fans took note that KC’s second-half offensive struggles were a feeling they knew all too well:
  • Every. Other. Team. That includes the Bears! Yes, even these Bears — who had four games of starting a backup signal caller who began the summer as QB4 on the depth chart and has a large chunk of its fanbase obsessively following college quarterback prospects — have scored more second-half points (on average) than the Chiefs. Mind. Blown.
  • The Chiefs have been shut out in the second half of three consecutive games. Do you remember the Bears’ second-half offensive struggles under Matt Nagy? It is OK if you don’t. Because that just means you did a good job of erasing it from your brain. Good job on your part. Those are memories no one should have rattling around between the eras.
  • The duality of man in two tweets (and with friendship bracelets):
  • Let me take this moment to say I’m not comfortable calling for folks to lose their jobs. That just seems mean-spirited. Especially during the holiday season. And that’s just not who I am at my core. But I won’t be shy in pointing out when things aren’t working or underscoring that an amicable split would be best for both parties. If you couldn’t tell by now, I feel strongly that the Bears would be better off in the future once they part ways with some of the coaches they’re currently staffing. More on that in a later post.
  • that Week 12 of the 2023 NFL season is the first in which the league can flex games out of Monday Night Football. But as we pointed out last week, the window to move the Bears-Vikings matchup OUT of primetime has already passed. So brace yourselves for a Justin Fields-Josh Dobbs showdown.
  • Roster update: . This means there is an open spot available. Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus said there wasn’t anything to report on from the injury front, so it’s not as if the team has a burning need to use that roster spot on at this time.
  • Although, it might be time to add a practice squad leg. Punter Trenton Gill ranks 25th among 36 qualifying punters with a 45.7 net average and 26th in punts inside the 20. Getting the punter right isn’t a high priority right now when this team has so many other needs. But it is on our radar as a position that could use some improvement down the stretch.
  • Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson has a health update:
  • Translation: Minnesota’s WR1 probably isn’t coming back for this week’s game against the Bears.
  • FWIW: Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell says Jefferson is questionable to return for MNF, . But it sounds like they are approaching his return with an abundance of caution. Good idea!
  • Sid Luckman, the gold standard of Bears quarterbacks, was born on this date in 1916:
  • I love for unearthing and sharing content like the video above.
  • Some fun from our friends at BN’s Cubs wing: Brett explores a realistic package if the Cubs were to acquire Padres star Juan Soto via trade.
  • Tab writes about Blackhawks prospects highlighted in updated 2024 World Junior roster projections. (BN Blackhawks)
  • From BN Bulls: More on that Zach LaVine postgame incident.
