Matt Eberflus said offensive coordinator candidates were “blowing up” his phone.
And now, we have the fir✃st name ♍for the Chicago Bears list of potential offensive coordinators — Shane Waldron of the Seattle Seahawks. :
Waldron currently 𓆏has the title of offensive coordinator with Seattle. It is a job he has held since 2021. And it might be a job he holds in the future. But as Pelissero points out above, there is uncertainty with the Seahawks after the team parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll. With Carroll out of the picture, the assistants he left behind could be available. At a minimum, the Bears should be kicking the tires here — if only to chop it up about the process it took to get the most out of Geno Smith.
Who is Shane Waldron?
The Bears need a new offensive coordinator afte🔴r firing Luke Getsy on 🎐Wednesday. And Waldron being a candidate makes a ton of sense.
Waldron, 44, has been coaching since 2005 and has experience coaching in the pros that dates back to 2008 when he was a New England Patriots offensive quality control coach. That’s pretty neat. In the past, Waldron has coached tight ends, receivers, and quarterbacks. He also held the pass game coordinator. We’ll do a deeper dive on his résumé later. But for now, I just want to highlight that he has dabbled in different position groups (which is something I wouldn’t mind seeing with the Bears’ next play caller).
As for his most recent venture with the Seattle Seahawks, Waldron’s offense ranked 17th in points and 21st in yards this season. Those aren’t the best numbers, but they’re also not the worst. However, it is worth underscoring that Waldron’s unit ranked 12th in DVOA offense. In other words, this group is a tier better than their middling raw numbers suggest. I’m looking forward to digging more into Waldron in the coming days.
