Keenan Allen Speaks: Trade Reaction, Thoughts on New Offense, Coach Reunion, Caleb, More

I’ve had sleeps since the Ch🐎icago Bears swung a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers to acquire wide receiver Keenan Allen. And while I’m still trying to get a full grasp of the Bears having two legitimate WR1 types on the same roster, I’m starting to settle in with the feeling that Chicago’s offense has the potential to go off. It excited me just to think about its upside. There’s plenty of time to discuss and I imagine we’ll get to all of it in due time.

For now, we have some words said by the new Bears wide receiver. Allen arrived in Chicago on Friday and spoke with the media on Saturday. I’ve pulled out some highlights and added depth (and some commentary). Hope you enjoy!

Keenan Allen on the Chicago Bears offensive potential

Whether the quarterback changes or stays the same is irrelevant to the following quote because there is a new sheriff in town calling the plays with Shane Waldron entering Year 1 as the Bears’ offensive coordinator. In addition to having a new play caller and playbook, Chicago’s football team has some new weapons. Allen is one of them, but I thought this anecdote about what lies ahead for the offense piques my interest:

“We can be really special. We’ve got weapons. Guys who can beat man all over the field. So double-teaming one guy is going to be costly for the defense and I think we can use that as our advantage. Like having a running back coming out of the backfield, make plays, beat 1-on-1s, that’s kinda big.”

That was an interesting bit of perspective from Allen. Particularly because Allen knows all too well what an offense can look like when two stud receivers are garnering a heckuva lot of attention while a running back scrambles underneath. Austin Ekeler did crazy numbers for the Chargers (and fantasy teams) while the likes of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams were working downfield. In other words, I think Chicago’s newest wideout just gave us a hint at what the offense could look like with D’Andre Swift taking advantage of the attention Allen and D.J. Moore will get this coming season.

What are the Bears getting in Keenan Allen?

A self assessment from the new guy:

“I’m a friendly guy on and off the field. On the football field, I know the game. I know the ins-and-outs. I know the zones. I know how to beat man. I know pretty much how to play the game. I just think I’m friendly for the quarterback because I’ll be in the right spots. I know how to communicate with him, and my body language is solid, too.”

CHECK IT OUT: Keenan Allen Highlights

Quarterback friendly is a term I’d have used to describe Keenan Allen to those who weren’t familiar with his game. So I’m glad he used those words himself. Again, it doesn’t matter who is throwing Keenan the ball. Allen is going to get his, move the chains, score some touchdowns, and create a good environment for the guy slinging it. What else could you ask for from a WR?

Extra points

  • I love this zinger from Keenan Allen: “Nothing changes but the jersey for me. The last name on the back is the same. That’s what I’m carrying.”
  • Allen has just one year left on the contract he signed with the Chargers, so there are obviously going to be questions about his long-term future. For what it’s worth, Allen hinted that he expects to be with the Bears beyond this season. And while he didn’t provide a timeline on an extension, Allen said “we’ll get there down the line.”
  • Keenan Allen telling reporters: “I wanted to finish my career there” in reference to Los Angeles and adding “but things happen and you’ve got to keep on going” is a solid lesson to keep in mind both in terms of being a football fan (as well as in life). Life happens. The things you envisioned doing won’t always come true. But you’ve gotta keep chugging along. Things don’t stop coming just because you got thrown for a loop.
  • Allen wasn’t asked about quarterback Justin Fields, but he did share that he has met Caleb Williams (this makes sense considering they both played in L.A. last year) and said this about the USC QB: “He looks like he knows the game really well and he’s really good.” You can take that quote for whatever it is worth.
  • Of course, Keenan Allen is a happy camper as he gets to reunite with wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, who was in that role for the Chargers last year. He also has a history with Gerald Everett, who he referred to as the tight end who just signed with Chicago.
  • Allen mentioned that the Bears flew him out on a private jet to come to Chicago, which marks his first time on a private jet. I’ve also never flown on a private jet. So if someone wants to fly me out for funsies, my DMs are open.
