I’ve had sleeps since the Ch🐎icago Bears swung a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers to acquire wide receiver Keenan Allen. And while I’m still trying to get a full grasp of the Bears having two legitimate WR1 types on the same roster, I’m starting to settle in with the feeling that Chicago’s offense has the potential to go off. It excited me just to think about its upside. There’s plenty of time to discuss and I imagine we’ll get to all of it in due time.
For now, we have some words said by the new Bears wide receiver. Allen arrived in Chicago on Friday and spoke with the media on Saturday. I’ve pulled out some highlights and added depth (and some commentary). Hope you enjoy!
Keenan Allen on the Chicago Bears offensive potential
Whether the quarterback changes or stays the same is irrelevant to the following quote because there is a new sheriff in town calling the plays with Shane Waldron entering Year 1 as the Bears’ offensive coordinator. In addition to having a new play caller and playbook, Chicago’s football team has some new weapons. Allen is one of them, but I thought this anecdote about what lies ahead for the offense piques my interest:
“We can be really special. We’ve got weapons. Guys who can beat man all over the field. So double-teaming one guy is going to be costly for the defense and I think we can use that as our advantage. Like having a running back coming out of the backfield, make plays, beat 1-on-1s, that’s kinda big.”
That was an interesting bit of perspective from Allen. Particularly because Allen knows all too well what an offense can look like when two stud receivers are garnering a heckuva lot of attention while a running back scrambles underneath. Austin Ekeler did crazy numbers for the Chargers (and fantasy teams) while the likes of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams were working downfield. In other words, I think Chicago’s newest wideout just gave us a hint at what the offense could look like with D’Andre Swift taking advantage of the attention Allen and D.J. Moore will get this coming season.
What are the Bears getting in Keenan Allen?
A self assessment from the new guy:
“I’m a friendly guy on and off the field. On the football field, I know the game. I know the ins-and-outs. I know the zones. I know how to beat man. I know pretty much how to play the game. I just think I’m friendly for the quarterback because I’ll be in the right spots. I know how to communicate with him, and my body language is solid, too.”
CHECK IT OUT: Keenan Allen Highlights
Quarterback friendly is a term I’d have used to describe Keenan Allen to those who weren’t familiar with his game. So I’m glad he used those words himself. Again, it doesn’t matter who is throwing Keenan the ball. Allen is going to get his, move the chains, score some touchdowns, and create a good environment for the guy slinging it. What else could you ask for from a WR?
