We started this week thinking we’d see a big-money quarterback contract hit the wire. And by the end of the week, we finally got it. But it isn’t the quarterback you were probably thinking about.
Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins have a deal to 🌳keep Tua Time ticking on South Beach:
If there were any questions about who the Miami Dolphins’ franchise quarterback would be moving forward, this deal answers ’em. it is a four-year deal for Tua, who gets $212.4 million from the Dolphins. that the deal with the Dolphins includes $167 million coming Tagovailoa’s way. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a Friday payday. And when you can get the kind of deal Tua Tagovailoa did from the Dolphins, you’d be in a celebratory mood, too.
Tua Tagovailoa is coming off his best year as a pro. He led the NFL in passing yards (4,624), threw for 29 touchdowns (against just 14 interceptions), completed 69.3 percent of his passes, posted a 101.1 passer rating, and made the Pro Bowl. If he continues to put up those types of numbers, the Dolphins probably won’t regret forking over all that cash.
One day, I hope to write a post about Caleb Williams cashing in with a big contract to extend his stay with the Chicago Bears. It’s been such a long time since a Bears QB has signed a second contract with the team. Heck, the last two guys didn’t even make it through the fifth-year option of their respective rookie deals. Here’s hoping Caleb Williams’ arrival in Chicago changes the narrative arc of Bears quarterbacks. For far too long, that position group has brought us nothing but pain. And we certainly haven’t had a signal caller who has been worthy of receiving this type of extension.
In the meantime, I’ll gladly enjoy thinking about the flexibility the Bears have with a quarterback on a rookie-scale contract for the next few years.
Tua Tagovailoa gets an extension from the Miami Dolphins
Tua Tagovailoa joins Trevor Lawrence and Jared Goff (as quarterbacks who recently signed big-money extensions to stick with their respective teams. Also notable here is that Tua joins the $50 million-per-year quarterbacks club. It is an exclusive list. One I wish I was skilled enough to join myself. Instead, I’ll enjoy writing about those who do. Once the dust settles and things become officially official, this is what a list of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league getting on an annual basis will look like:
All of these contracts have been signed rather recently and it blows my mind. Business is booming for quarterbacks. And it doesn’t take a vivid imagination to envision that more are coming down the pipeline.
Heck, where is the Green Bay Packers front office with that Jordan Love extension? In case you missed it, Love is holding out and skipping practice until the two sides get a deal done. For what it’s worth, Packers management seems optimistic that an extension will get ironed out soon. But for now, we’re in a holding pattern while Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, and Jacob Eason split reps at Packers camp.
Meanwhile, Love is probably forwarding news of the Tua extension and telling his management team he will accept nothing less than what Tua Tagovailoa just got from the Dolphins. I can’t say I blame him either. After all, you can’t get what you don’t ask for in negotiations. Take all the time you need, Jordan. And if it takes you through Week 11 until you get a deal done, then so be it.
