Even after starting the week with a holdout, it was only a matter of time until Jordan Love and the Green B💙ay Packers agreed on an extension.
And on Friday night, it happened:
If you would’ve told the version of Luis who was residing in July 2023 that Jordan Love would be the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback he would’ve laughed in your stupid face. There was no way that was even conceivable at this time last year. But we are living in a reality in which Love was handed a record-setting contract by the Packers. Truth be told, my brain is still a little scattered as I try to figure out how we made it onto a timeline in which Green Bay has landed on a third consecutive franchise quarterback. Whatever.
Inside Jordan Love’s record-setting extension with the Green Bay Packers
on the four-year, $220 million contract that ties Jordan Love with Jacksonville Jaguars QB1 Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati Bengals signal caller Joe Burrow as the highest-paid quarterbacks on a per-year basis. For instance, Demovsky points out that Love’s deal features $155 million worth of new full guarantees and a record $75 million signing bonus. These are astronomical numbers in a booming quarterback market that is blowing up in ways that I wasn’t sure were possible.
One more thing that stands out to me is the timing of the deal. Jordan Love got his new contract ironed out just hours after Tua Tagovailoa was given a four-year deal worth $212.4 million from the Miami Dolphins. The extension of Tua Time on South Beach came with a $53.1 million average annual value. And it was drawn up by Athletes First, which is the same agency that represents Love. So after considering those factors, I figured that (1) a Love deal wasn’t too far behind and (2) he wasn’t going to take a penny less than what Tua got from Miami.
In the end, the big takeaway here is that Jordan Love is going to be a Bears opponent for the foreseeable future. The 25-year-old quarterback is coming off a season in which he threw for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns while posting a 96.1 passer rating. I’ll admit those are impressive numbers. Especially when you remember that Love’s numbers after his first five starts looked like this: 55.6 completion percentage, 8 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 77.3 passer rating. Love looked cooked after that loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football. Things were looking grim for the Packers at that moment. I miss those days.
Ah, well. I guess it is up to Matt Eberflus and the Chicago Bears defense to slow him down. It’s not like it is an impossible ask. Just take the Niners for example:
May the Force be with us all.
