Chicago Bears Hard Knocks Episode 3: Recap & Best Moments

Hard Knocks started on time this week!

I enjoyed tonight’s show again. I feel like this week is more than the previous week I heard a lot more complaints about people not liking the show or being upset at the lack of a real deep look into the Bears training camp. But honestly, I’m not really sure what people expected. Teams have final edits for Hard Knocks, and they’ll never give away any major looks into camp and practice. They really haven’t done that in years.

The show has been a fun overview of the Bears training camp in a year that Chicago is one of the main focuses of the NFL. I’m happy to just enjoy this look into Bears camp for what it is. It’s a fun, unique way to experience training camp that we’ve never really gotten before and won’t again for a very long time, if ever.

Hard Knocks Ep. 3 Highlights

  • The opening scene of Caleb Williams and Matt Eberflus going through the film from Buffalo was interesting. Flus is the head coach of the Bears, so he should have his hands in everything, but watching him lead a QB film session was fascinating.
  • Also, Caleb saying “Practice is harder than the game” was absolutely awesome.
  • Caleb Williams and Pardon My Take cameo was fun to see. Also, that throw he made across his body along the sideline during that montage was amazing.
  • I feel like we got a good look into Tyson Bagent last season when he started for Justin Fields for a few weeks, but still, the segment focusing on him was great. He’s an interesting dude and has taken such a unique path to be the Bears’ backup QB. I’m glad HBO gave him his flowers in this episode. And of course, they couldn’t go a full season of Hard Knocks following the Bears without mentioning that his dad was a champion arm wrestler.
  • !
  • I’m really surprised they gave us a look at the Matthew Judon situation and the Bears ultimately not getting him. I kind of figured that would be something since the Bears ended up not getting him, that this might have been a storyline that would have been skipped over. I’m not someone who’s been too upset about the lack of in-depth storylines thus far through the series, but I’m pleasantly surprised they included the Judon pursuit and some of the reasoning behind the result.
  • The same thing goes for the Austin Booker trade negotiation back at the NFL Draft. It’s cool to see that they had access to that footage all the way back to April and it just kind of goes to show that so much of what these guys are doing is documented on camera.

  • We finally got our Tory Taylor segment! It’s really too bad he didn’t like the “Crocodile Punter” nickname because that would have been awesome. I’m not sure I’ve ever been able to say that I’m excited to watch someone punt, but I’m so incredibly excited to watch Tory Taylor punt (maybe like 1-2 times a game, tops).
  • My heart skipped a beat during the rain montage when Rome Odunze slipped after making that nice catch. I mean, I know he’s not hurt clearly, but that looked like it could have ended bad!
  • If he can stay healthy for the majority of the year, Keenan Allen is going to be so good this season. He’s been such a high-end receiver for the Chargers throughout his career, and now he has as good of a supporting cast as he’s ever had in the receiver room. He’s got a chance to have an awesome season.

  • A Kevin Warren new stadium scene was bound to happen eventually.
  • I’m also a little surprised they addressed the Simone Biles’ Packers jacket situation, but I guess any time HBO can get Biles into an episode they’re going to take that opportunity. And honestly, I don’t really blame them.
  • The defensive montage from the Bengals game was well done. This Bears defense has a chance to be really good this year, and they did a great job Saturday holding things down while the offense struggled.
  • Getting to see the Caleb and Rome connection develop has been great. They seem to be totally on the same page not only during the play but when talking in the huddle or at practice. They just feel like they get each other.
  • I loved seeing Caleb Williams insisting on holding onto the football after his first touchdown. Like, he didn’t even give it to someone to put in his locker, he just held onto it.
  • Shoutout to all the holders out there!
  • They’ve gotten lucky that the Bears have played two teams thus far in the preseason with top-tier quarterbacks, but I like how HBO has been sure to document both Josh Allen and Joe Burrow’s postgame interactions with Caleb.
