Chicago Bears Hard Knocks Episode 4: Recap & Best Moments

Just one episode of Hard Knocks left!

While I’ll certainly miss the look into Bears training camp, the end of Hard Knocks means that the regular season is arriving, and I’m so incredibly ready for real, live, meaningful Bears football.

Let’s get to episode four.

Hard Knocks Ep. 4 Highlights

  • Ryan Poles’ sleeveless hoodie/long-sleeve shirt look is fantastic.
  • The number of coaches and staff in these meetings is kind of astounding. I know it’s not the first time we’ve seen one of those full-staff meetings, but it just jumped out at me this time for some reason.
  • I love that Poles pointed out the not-full paint job of the endzone Rome Odunze’s near-touchdown against the Bengals. I mean, Kerry Joseph was right – know where you are on the field – but at the same time the back of the endzone is fully painted in white on every field, so if Odunze was using his peripherals he could easily get thrown off.
  • The spotlight on Ian Wheeler and the two running back coaches made me sad. Chad Morton and Jennifer King both clearly like him. Knowing how his preseason came to an end while watching his segment just made me sad. Hopefully, he fully recovers and lands somewhere, but having medical school to fall back on isn’t a horrible backup plan!
  • Chad Morton feels like the type of coach you’d love if he was your position coach. But also one that might be very annoying (if you were on defense) during team segments when he’s running all over the field after decent plays from his backs.
  • It took them over 12 minutes to get to Caleb!
  • The attention to detail the Bears are using with Caleb is impressive. I mean, he’s having a film session on how to spike the ball correctly! Side note, even though that intentional grounding got called in the preseason, it would have to be so, SO egregious to get called in a real game situation.

  • Ferris Bueller shoutout! Feels like HBO has hit just about every cheesy Chicago reference throughout this series. While DJ Moore’s family going to the ice cream museum (I still need to get there) seemed like a fun, real off-time moment, this Sears Tower trip with the QBs felt very HBO-organized.
  • 10 teams in 8 years just sounds absolutely exhausting! Hopefully, and finds himself a spot this season. He seems like an easy guy to root for. The story of his childhood bike accident was a tough one to watch. It’s so cool that he’s come back from that to an NFL career and can even get himself back on a bicycle again.
  • Theo Benedet does it again! Him legitimately trying to defend getting Clorox wipes as a substitute for Dude Wipes is fantastic.
  • Chad Morton and Jennifer King helping prep Ian Wheeler for his rookie performance was just another example of how well-liked he is. The smoke machine and getting Velus Jones Jr in as a backup dancer was a nice touch to that performance. But again, it’s so hard to watch these Ian Wheeler clips knowing what happens in the Chiefs game.
  • The contrast between Adrian Colbert meditating and calming his mind while Tyson Bagent’s dad is arm wrestling in a Kansas City bar was hilarious.
  • While Bagent certainly seems to be a gamer in his own right, his personality seems like it couldn’t be more different from his dad. Or at least how he psyches himself up?
  • Seeing all of the stars’ arrivals for the last preseason game knowing none of them were going to play was pretty funny.
  • Just how far Tyson Bagent has come in a short amount of time is pretty wild. He’s gone from a D2 starter to potentially one of the top backup QBs in the NFL in just two short years. The Bears have a good one in their backup. At some point, someone will want to give him a chance as a starter, but until then I’m happy he’s here. Also, the sideline hats he and Caleb were wearing during that KC game were fantastic.

  • I know it was just the preseason, but seeing the montage of the Bears’ defense dominating the Chiefs was so much fun.
  • Oh no. We’re getting Ian Wheeler’s mom talking about how you never know how many opportunities you’ll get so Ian should make the most of this one. And he’s about to tear his ACL. Damnit.
  • “Are you good?” “No.”
  • Even in the preseason, I still love hearing Jeff Joniak say “Touchdown, Touchdown Bears!”
  • “Legion of Boom. ’85 Bears. ’24 Preseason Bears.” – Austin Reed
  • We didn’t get a Caleb Williams and Patrick Mahomes postgame interaction!
  • Man. Ian Wheeler’s hug with his mom. No words, just straight into the hug. That was tough. That whole scene was really well done, but really hard.
  • The Ryan Poles/Ian Wheeler meeting was well done. You can tell how heartbroken Wheeler is, but at the same time, his going on IR and getting to stick with the Bears, rehab, and get another shot at things could end up giving him a chance to stick next training camp.
  • The Bears have a good one in Ryan Poles. You can tell he clearly cared for Ian Wheeler during that entire meeting and truly wants what’s best for him. And that was just a running back who was unlikely to make the team. The guy gets it, and he gets how to treat people it seems.
