New England Patr🅺iots rookie quarterback Drake Maye will start the 2024 season 🔥holding a clipboard.
NFL Network insiꦍder Ian Rapoport has news of aℱhead of Maye, the No. 3 selection from the 2024 NFL Draft, to begin the year:
Drake Maye is made to play the waiting game
Now that the Patriots’ decision is in the books, here is a rundown of what is happening with the first-round rookie quarterbacks from the NFL Draft class of 2024:
Drake Maye is certainly in the Patriots’ long-term plans. The University of North Carolina product has been a highly-touted prospect for a while and showed some promise during the preseason. But if you look at the talent around Maye in New England, then you might see this as a blessing in disguise. These aren’t the Pats of the Belichickian era. Not by a long shot.
All that to say the following: I still expect Drake Maye to get a promotion into the starting QB role at some point this season. And to be specific, I predict Maye will be starting by the time the Patriots and Bears square off in Week 10 on November 10. If all goes to plan, we’ll get a battle between the No. 1 (Williams) and No. 3 (Maye) selections in last April’s NFL Draft. And it would come just two weeks after Williams faces the No. 2 overall pick (Daniels) from that class. What a fun scheduling quirk we get to experience as Bears fans.

In the end, Jacoby Brissett is nothing more than a placeholder until the Patriots feel comfortable starting Maye. And even though that job has its risks, there are worse ways to make a living than as a QB2. In Chicago, we’re familiar with this path because we’ve seen Mike Glennon and Andy Dalton play the role of sacrificial lamb QB ahead of the first-round pick with potential. Now, Brissett gets that gig in New England.
