Friday’s Chicago Bears injury report brings news of some key players who will (and won’t) play in Week 2 against the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football.
Let’s run down some notes from :
Offensive lineman Ryan Bates (shoulder, elbow) has already been ruled OUT for Sunday’s game. Yikes. Bates began the week as a limited participant in practice because of shoulder and elbow injuries, but has since missed each of the last two practices. So much for the competition to start at right guard. Nate Davis is positioned to make the most of a golden opportunity to prove why there shouldn’t be a head-to-head showdown in the first place.
Fullback Khari Blasingame (hand, knee) is also OUT for Sunday’s showdown in Houston. Blasingame, like Bates, started this week practicing in a limited capacity before missing back-to-back practices on Thursday and Friday. Clearly, whatever hand/knee injury Blasingame is dealing with is serious enough to designate him as being out before the team even leaves for Houston.
OK, so the bad news is that wide receiver Keenan Allen didn’t practice for a third consecutive day. However, rookie wideout Rome Odunze went from not practicing to doing so on a limited basis. I’ll take that silver lining to be an encouraging sign that Rome’s injury won’t keep him out for too long. Both receivers are listed as questionable to play. I’m holding out hope that at least one will be available on game day. But if you need me, I’ll be bracing myself for the worst-case scenario.
Defensive end DeMarcus Walker and defensive tackle Zacch Pickens were both full participants during Friday’s practice. For Pickens, this is back-to-back full practice days. As for Walker, his practice participation has seen an upgrade in each of the last two days. The week began with Walker not practicing because of his foot injury. Since then, he has been upgraded to limited (Thursday) and full (Friday). Walker was participating in a limited capacity throughout the Week 1 practices leading up to the game. And then he responded by having a whale of a contest. I’m down to see history repeat itself. Walker is questionable for Sunday, while Pickens has no designation — which means the second-year DT is ready to go.
Rookie offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie (quad) was upgraded from limited to full on the practice report. At the risk of sounding overly repetitive, there is no reason to rush the rookie into action. And yet, there is still a part of me itching to know if Amegadjie could slot into the Bears’ plans at guard if Ryan Bates or Nate Davis doesn’t lock down the position soon.
Tight end Marcedes Lewis was a full participant in Friday’s practice after once again receiving the veteran’s rest day on Wednesday.
All things considered, this is a relatively healthy-looking Bears injury report. We’ll see what else pops up between now and game day.
Luis C. Medina, who you can find on Twitter at lcm1986, has been covering the Chicago Bears at Bleacher Nation since 2017. Since then, he has written about 3 head coaches, 5 play-callers, and 11 starting quarterbacks. Previously, Luis wrote about the Cubs and MLB at BN (2015-16) and worked in the Chicago Tribune sports department (2011-ꦰ16). He also co-hosted a Cubs postgame show, Outside the Ivy, in 2019.
