It looks like North Carolina sports betting fans will not be celebrating the new year with the ability to bet online. The North Carolina Lottery Commission says the state will not be ready for a launch in early January. Here’s what we know.
North Carolina Sports Betting Won’t Launch on January 8
When the state🔯 law was passed for legal online sports betting, North Carolina set the earliest date for launch for January 8, 2024. The committee in charge of rules, regulations, and more for sports betting in the state has announced that online betting will not go live in early January.
No Date Set Just Yet for NC Sports Betting
While the state isn’t going to be launching any form of online gambling in January, the North Carolina Sports Betting Committee also didn’t specify when betting will go live. The committee did share they are on track to get sports betting launched by the June 15 deadline.
The state law required Nor🌱th Carolina to launch sports 🃏betting within a year of the signing of the bill in June 2023.
Operators Still Can’t Apply for Licenses
Sports betting operators still haven’t submitted applications to apply for licenses in the state. This is one of the major reasons North Carolina will not be ready in January for a launch. Once operators can apply for sports betting licenses, it will take the committee time to review applications and approve the top sportsbooks for launch.

There is some good news as the committee approved an initial set of sports that will be legal to wager on in the state. This is another step in the right direction as North Carolina gets closer to getting sports betting off the ground. The committee will meet again to finalize the list.
