We’ve thought it was coming. We’ve been led to believe it was possible. But on Thursday morning, less than 12 hours before the finale of the 2022-23 NHL regular season, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson the reality: this is the end for Jonathan Toews as a member of the organization.
Davidson held his end of season media availability on Thursday morning at Fifth🍌 Third Arena and co𓂃ncluded his opening statement by saying the organization will not be offering Toews a contract moving forward. The team then tweeted this message:
Davidson said he informed Toews that this was the🌃 end when the team was in Seattle.
When asked why the organization made the decision to move♑ on, 🍬Davidson said he wants a clean slate for the next generation. He wants to afford the next wave of Blackhawks the same opportunity that Toews, Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith had when they arrived almost two decades ago.
Whether or not the team names a new captain next year was not brought up, but Davidson said he’s going to leave it up to the players in the room to decide what the leadership group looks like in the future.
