Around the NHL: Dubois to LA, Newhook to Montreal, Blues Land Hayes, DeBrincat Available (Again), More

The 2023 NHL Draft begins on Wednesday, and now that the NHL Awards are in the rear view mirro▨r it appears the time to do business has arrived. Trades are starting to happen and teams are starting to make their best offers to ꦜmove up/around/add in the draft. And a couple of the headline deals impact the Central Division right out of the gate.

  • The big blockbuster trade we’ve been waiting for happened on Tuesday. The LA Kings acquired center Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets for Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The Kings then signed PLD to an eight-year, $68 million contract ($8.5M AAV).

  • The Colorado Avalanche scored a couple nice picks from the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday afternoon in exchange for the rights to RFA center Alex Newhook. Defenseman Gianni Fairbrother, sent to Colorado in the deal as well, was originally a third-round pick by Montreal in 2019.

  • The St. Louis Blues took advantage of the Flyers’ desire to rebuild with limited cap flexibility on Tuesday. The Flyers retained half of veteran center Kevin Hayes’ cap hit while sending him to the Blues for only a sixth-round pick. Hayes was originally the Blackhawks’ first-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft but opted to sign elsewhere after four underwhelming seasons at Boston College. He’s carved out a nice career, though, so this is a really nice add for the Blues.

  • The Ottawa Senators are now apparently committed to moving on from Alex DeBrincat just one short year after they traded two picks — including the seventh overall selection — in last year’s draft to the Blackhawks to get him.

  • No, the Blackhawks aren’t in the market for a player like DeBrincat at this time.

  • Yes, general manager Kyle Davidson did the right thing 12 months ago. In fact, he looks smarter almost every day at this point…

  • So Erik Karlsson wins the Norris Trophy on Monday night and, on Tuesday, the rumors pick up significantly. Coincidence? I doubt it. He’s got a huge cap number but clearly has enough left in the tank that teams that can afford him — or can make a trade that creates enough cap room to fit him in — should be lining up around the block. Seattle is a fascinating play here and, frankly, I would love to see it. But this might take more time than just this week to get done.

  • Maybe Seattle is looking for a defenseman because they’re going to lose at least one from their NHL roster from this past season? I’m not saying Karlsson would be a replacement of Carson Soucy, but it certainly appears Soucy is going to hit the open market this weekend. He’s a nice player; Karlsson is a future Hall of Famer. That would be a massive upgrade.

  • The San Jose Sharks added a goaltender on Tuesday, acquiring Mackenzie Blackwood from the Devils for a sixth-round pick in this week’s draft. Blackwood is currently an RFA.

  • I’ve written about Yegor Sharangovich as a potential trade target for the Blackhawks as an RFA on a team that likely doesn’t have room for him financially or on their roster. I’m actually pretty interested in seeing how this plays out because I think he’s a nice player who might be had for lower-than-expected cost.

  • It sounds like even with the sell low trade of Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno on Monday, the Bruins are still trying to navigate a new reality.

  • The Dallas Stars were able to get a deal done with one of their pending free agent forwards on Tuesday as well. Evgenii Dadonov inked a two-year deal with a $2.25M AAV to stick in Dallas.
