CONNOR BEDARD (and Oliver Moore, too!) and Other Blackhawks Bullets

So anyways the Blackhawks drafted Connor Bedard last night. That’s pretty cool… The first round of the draft came and went without a single trade, which shocked me (and many others). There are still some really good prospects available before the start of the second round, so the Blackhawks maintaining their four selections in the second and two third-rounders means they’ll have the opportunity to add some more talent to the pipeline.

  • If you’ve followed my draft prep work over the past couple months, you’ll know one of the players I’ve loved the idea of landing in Chicago has been Oliver Moore. Well, the Blackhawks got Moore, too! And they got him at No. 19 overall — no trade-up necessary. The Blackhawks’ first two picks were MASSIVE wins for the franchise. The future of the Blackhawks is going to look like Ferraris on ice.
  • I absolutely love this take when asked about the lack of size in the two centers the Blackhawks drafted in the first round last night. The Blackhawks got the best overall prospect (in nearly a decade) and the best skater in the draft (for the second straight year, I might add). The reason teams covet size is because it isn’t always available. But if you focus on that singular element, you might ignore other flaws in a player’s game. I’m not going to say Kirby Dach’s name here, I promise.
  • Here’s some more Bedard content from the interwebs last night:
  • The congratulations came flying for Bedard quickly after his name was called from all over the sports landscape. The Bulls could only manage a quote tweet; the Cubs were playing. But the White Sox graphic department was ready to put out a tweet that didn’t have replies that cost them sleep. I like the look!
  • Bedard looked good on the red carpet and on camera leading up to the actual draft beginning. I’m sure Holt Renfrew is totally cool with the entire world knowing that the top pick in a potentially historic draft class — a generational prospect — was wearing a suit they produced.
  • The Predators couldn’t keep Chicago fans from buying tickets to this event (cough, easy banners) so Blackhawks fans showed up last night. Hell yeah they did! Love to see/hear it!
  • Bedard is the latest player from the WHL to be selected first overall, but there haven’t been that many. In fact, only one other WHL player has been selected since Chris Phillips went No. 1 to Ottawa back in 1996!
  • I wonder if Sid will have any additional advice for Bedard when he makes his regular-season NHL debut on Oct. 10 in Pittsburgh…
  • Finally, since we’re all getting hyped about prospects and young players getting called up… let’s go to the diamond for a first home run!
