Welcome to “so… what do we talk about today?” season, Blackhawks fans. Free agency has slowed to a crawl with only a few names left on the market and the Hawks’ development camp is in the books. A few of the young guys who were in town for camp this past week will be back on the ice at camps to determine rosters for the World Juniors in the coming weeks, but I really don’t expect much from the Hawks between now and closer to training camp in September. The most significant box that needs to be checked is a contract for Philipp Kurashev.

  • Ben Pope wrote a lovely story about Oliver Moore for the on Sunday. One of the things that was evident when he spoke with the media this week for a second time was that he is a driven, competitive young man. Asked about his goals for the coming season (in which he’ll be playing for the University of Minnesota), Moore’s immediate response was “win a national championship.” When you read the three quotes below that are in Pope’s story from the Blackhawks’ two, first-round picks and the general manager who selected them, you see that Kyle Davidson’s plan got two enormous boosts this year at the top of the draft. Looking for elite skill and leadership? Chicago got it — twice.

  • Oliver Moore: “Right after the draft, [Bedard and I] were already talking about getting in the gym and getting ready to work. It’s already rubbing off on me, his work ethic and the way he carries himself.”

  • Connor Bedard: “I think the same. [Moore is] a really hard worker, and he’s really competitive — he wasn’t happy when he lost in spikeball. It was great getting to know him. He’s a special player. His off-ice habits and his work ethic were great to see.”

  • General Manager Kyle Davidson: “That’s what you want. That’s culture. [When] you see players come in, and they’re already dictating positive behaviors, that’s the goal that you seek. And we’ve got a lot of that in the room.”

  • Have you tried yet? If you aren’t familiar, it’s nine boxes and you have to name a player who matches the horizontal and vertical descriptions. So, in today’s version, you need to name players who have played for both the Blackhawks and Panthers, Hawks and Golden Knights and one of the Blackhawks players who won the Hart Trophy (without cheating). There are nine squares and you get nine guesses to fill them… so one wrong answers ends your hopes for a perfect grid. I won’t give you my answers today… but I completed the grid.

  • Earlier this week we noted that a few Blackhawks prospects talked about learning breathing techniques from former NHL defenseman Johnny Oduya. I appreciated that Scott Powers re-shared this piece from a year ago catching up with Oduya to see what he’s been doing post-career.

  • Nashville signed 2023 draft picks Kalan Lind and Tanner Molendyk to their entry-level contracts.
  • Washington signed Andrew Cristall to his entry-level contract.
  • Vancouver signed Nils Höglander to a two-year contract.
