Kane’s Future, Reconsidering 2012, Galchenyuk Gone, a Collectibles Comic-Con? And Other Blackhawks Bullets

There’s been some speculation this week about the future of Jonathan Toews‘ professional hockey career. On Thursday, a report from ESPN (including comments from super agent Pat Brisson) indicated Patrick Kane will wait until he’s closer to returning to the ice — likely into the start of the 2023-24 regular season — before signing a contract for the coming season. Kane is recovering after having hip resurfacing surgery earlier in the offseason. It might be late-October or even November before we find out where Kaner’s going to play this coming season.

  • Happy birthday to MacKenzie Entwistle!
  • When the Boston Bruins announced they’re putting together an all-time, 20-man roster in celebration of their centennial. Which got me to thinking — and discussing on social media platforms — who would be on a Blackhawks’ all-time team. So I went ahead and wrote it up! Today I dropped the first part of the series which focuses on the forwards. Predictably, Kane and Toews both made my all-time forward lines for the Chicago Blackhawks. And the Golden Jet and Stosh are there. (And, because it’s my list, I’ll hit you with a spoiler that Steve Larmer made it.) But who else made my all-time lines? More importantly, who would be on your all-time lines?
  • Some good intel here from Scott Powers in his notebook piece on Friday morning.
  • The St. Louis Blues are 🌳expected to join the Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild for the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase this fall. The showcas♋e had been a two-team event the past few years. It was held in Chicago last year and will be in Minnesota this year.

  • That’s a fun trio. The in the 2023 NHL Draft, forward Dalibor Dvorsky, on Friday morning. And I would assume Connor Bedard could be in play to participate in this showcase event as well. It’s a shame they’re playing in Minnesota this year because the crowd to watch Bedard in Chicago would be crazy.
  • Alex Galchenyuk was in the news on Thursday. After signing a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes on July 1, he was placed on waivers for purposes of contract termination less than two weeks later. Lots of people were like WTF is going on here? But then Katie Strang at The Athletic dropped the details: Galchenyuk was reportedly arrested and charged a number of times for an incident that took place on July 9. Apparently that’s enough for the Coyotes to move on from a forward who showed so much promise earlier in his career.
  • How about a redraft of the 2012 NHL Draft? I do love second-guessing an entire draft class years after it took place because there are always so many guys who slip through the cracks and get passed on by teams, sometimes the entire league multiple times. The good people at JFresh ran through the 2012 NHL Draft yesterday and you’ll notice the Blackhawks — current and former — are frequently mentioned. In fact, nine of the top 64 players ranked have been through Chicago as a home team.
  • is coming to Chicago at the end of July. I love going whenever it’s in our fine city (well, Rosemont… but who’s really counting?) because it’s fun to see some amazing artifacts and spend money I don’t have on stuff my wife doesn’t know about (I hope she doesn’t read this today). Big news in that space came Thursday as Fanatics announced they’re getting into the collectibles event game. A “Comic-Con for sports collectibles” sounds too good to be true. I’m intrigued to see where this goes because hell yeah I’ll be there!
  • Dallas re-signed Ty Dellandrea to a one-year deal on Thursday. He’s a solid player and this is a smart deal for both sides.
  • Finally, let’s talk about how much fun prospect rankings are to think about and consider. Earlier this week I looked at what a Blackhawks’ lineup might look like in a couple years if we only consider internal prospects and already-signed players. What about the Cubs? Yeah, they have some talent in their pipeline, too.
