Kurashev Clock Ticking, Buy Gavin’s Jersey, DeAngelo Dumped, Panger’s Clubs, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks aren’t doing much these days, but the hockey world continues to move along. This weekend we’re sharing our picks for an all-time lineup for the Blackhawks. On Friday I put together four forward lines. This morning I shared my picks for three defensive pairsꦦ. Who makes your lineup? Let me know in the comments!

  • [Checks calendar] We’re now five days away from Philipp Kurashev‘s arbitration hearing and it’s radio silence from both sides of the discussion. With the Blackhawks already having a relatively full lineup, there isn’t a dire need for the club to throw money at Kurashev. But he’s a solid, useful, young forward who could contribute to the bottom six (where I maintain he should stay). We’ll continue to watch for a deal to be announced; the organization doesn’t have a great track record of keeping players around who go through the arbitration process, but this is a new front office so we’ll see how it plays out moving forward.
  • Want to have a unique piece of Blackhawks prospect memorabilia? The Flint Firebirds are auctioning off some game-worn jerseys. One of the players available is Gavin Hayes. My bid is in, so good luck beating it!
  • The Flyers for purposes of a buyout on Friday. According to , the move leaves the Flyers with roughly $3.8 million in cap space. What makes this interesting is DeAngelo is another name on the market who happens to be a right-handed defenseman. We’ve already talked about the lack of those individuals who are available right now. And it might make some wonder if the Blackhawks should make a call about his availability. I’m not sure how emphatically I can say NO to that idea.
  • Once a hockey player, always a hockey player. And when it’s beautiful outside in the summer, what do hockey players do? Golf, of course. Darren Pang is getting ready for his new role in the Blackhawks’ television booth on the links. That’s in impressive set of clubs Panger put out there on Twitter on Friday evening.
  • This is another really good read on how the University of Michigan is developing and weaponizing analytics under new head coach Brandon Naurato. I asked Frank Nazar about the similarities between how the Blackhawks are starting to use data under the new front office and how he’s experiencing it at UM and there are some really good similarities between the two. Any overlap in this area could make for exceptional development for Nazar (and other prospects in Ann Arbor, though the Hawks only have one there at this point).
  • If you want to spend some time this weekend dreaming about next year’s NHL draft, here’s a list of potential lottery picks from Sportsnet. Macklin Celebrini is going to be the headliner this season; he’ll be a teammate of Blackhawks prospect Ryan Greene at Boston University. But let’s all face the reality that the Blackhawks winning the lottery in back-to-back seasons would be a lot to ask (pray for?) and the roster Chicago will put on the ice to start the season could be better than last year’s edition. Certainly this year’s team will be more comfortable with fewer questions about tanking and fewer players fielding daily questions about getting traded until the deadline.
  • Finally, I love it when young players step up and establish themselves as leaders. There’s already been talk about Connor Bedard‘s work ethic impressing his teammates at development camp and with Canada’s World Junior roster(s). So seeing Justin Fields taking a big step forward this offseason is great.
