Nazar’s Huge Day, Considering Buy vs. Sell, Wild Lock Up Their Goalie, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

You want hockey in August! Well, there is indeed hockey in August! Well, yesterday was technically still July, but I’ll allow it. USA Hockey is hosting its Summer Showcase for the World Juniors this week and the first two games for the two American teams did not go very well. Yesterday they were back on the ice and the games went significantly better. And Blackhawks prospect Frank Nazar put on an absolute show! How about five points — including four goals!

Steven Ellis of shared some videos from the games yesterday (you can see Nazar’s fifth goal below) and also shared some notes from the games. Here’s what he had to say about Nazar’s performance yesterday:

It’s safe to say there’s nothing to worry about regarding his health. After missing most of 2022-23, Nazar looks healthy and playing like he did when he was a dominant junior player. He had four goals and five points to bounce back after a frustrating first game against Finland. With Michigan loo𒉰king a bit different this year, Nazar will play a big part. And that’s true for the world juniors, too.

  • While we’re on the Good Vibes Train this morning, let’s stay hot with some Connor Bedard content. This is from before the draft, but ESPN did a really nice job with this profile of the Blackhawks’ prospect. Since it’s August, and we’re now just a matter of weeks away from Bedard being on the ice with the NHL club, let’s enjoy!
  • While we’re enjoying Blackhawks prospects, let’s stay there with a nice goal from forward Artur Kayumov. The Blackhawks drafted Kayumov, 25, in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. It would be lovely if he came over to the NHL at some point because there’s some intriguing ability there.

  • Today is Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, which means there will be a lot of buzzing around this fine establishment as the Cubs (and other teams) try to make their rosters the best they can for the home stretch. With that in mind, I wanted to encourage Blackhawks fans to read this post from Brett because it’s brilliant, and has a lot to say that we should keep in mind for coming seasons. And, frankly, thoughts we can apply to some of what the Blackhawks have done over the past 15 months.
  • The thing is, you’re always going to be able to look back at ANY decision with regret, depending on whatever happens next, even if whatever happens next is unpredictable or uncontrolla💞ble. That’s just a life thing.

  • The Blackhawks are going to come to a place at some point in the coming seasons when the rebuild becomes a build, and the build becomes a situation where it’s time to push some of the chips in and go for it. The Cubs are — in theory — a few years ahead of the Blackhawks in their rebuild timeline. And their recent stretch of success made for some tougher decisions this season before today. Do they sell? Or is it time to buy? Thus far, they’ve added. But they’ve done so in a strategic way. I can’t wait for the Blackhawks to get to the point where they, too, begin strategically adding.
  • The Wild were able to get a multi-year deal done with their starting goaltender. But they still have some cap-related headaches to deal with in the coming weeks before the regular season opens. According to , Minnesota has a little more than $1.6 million in cap space left.
  • Finally, I already mentioned it’s trade deadline day for MLB. Which means it’s Day Two of the . Brett’s going strong, but the coffee is key. Feel free to chirp at him with some encouragement between now and dinner time when he’s finally able to log off and take a long, well-deserved nap.
