Remembering Patrick Kane, the Stanley Cup and Jimmy Buffet (and Other Blackhawks Bullets)

Sadly, on Saturday morning we learned of the passing of Jimmy Buffet. The legendary performer performed in front of excited fans for decades in and around Chicago. One such concert during the summer of 2010 included a couple special guests on stage: Patrick Kane and the Stanley Cup. Ah, the Kaner Shuffle in Margaritaville… what a time. RIP Jimmy.

  • I’ve been saying since the draft lottery that we shouldn’t put too much pressure on Connor Bedard. He’s a teenager, after all. But when you find out he’s already in the Hockey Hall of Fame? Well… the store at the Hall of Fame, at least. If you’re a Blackhawks fan in Toronto, go grab some 98 merch while supplies last! I might need a 98 coffee mug for the morning skates this coming season.
  • Martin Mišiak was the first overall pick in the CHL import draft this summer after the Blackhawks selected him in the second round (No. 55 overall) in the NHL Draft. He made his preseason debut for Erie on Friday and did not disappoint. He scored one goal and added three assists for a four-point effort.
  • Mišiak wasn’t the only Blackhawks prospect in that game. Nick Lardis had a goal and an assist to lead Brantford in the loss. Chicago drafted Lardis in the third round (No. 67 overall) and he may prove to be one of the steals of the 2023 NHL Draft. I really like his game and this is a terrific start to his preseason.
  • The guys over at CHGO ranked their ten most memorable trades in Blackhawks history on Friday. It’s a solid list and any time you make a list like this we can argue over the order of things based on personal preference/how much you liked a player. I tend to agree that the Roenick-Arizona and Chelios-Detroit trades are two of the most infamous in Blackhawks history and should be right at the top.
  • HOWEVER, the guys had the trade that acquired Patrick Sharp from the Flyers at No. 4 on their list. I’m throwing the flag here. Nope. How would acquiring Sharp be “memorable” to the 3,000 fans who cared about the Blackhawks in 2005? Sports talk radio in this town was openly mocking fans who called in to talk hockey at that point and home games weren’t on television. And let’s just be totally real for a moment: trading Eric Meloche for a former third-round pick who had 66 games of NHL experience on his resume three weeks shy of his 24th birthday was NOT getting people out of their recliners to buy tickets. Was it an all-time great trade for the Blackhawks? Hell yeah. Memorable? Nobody remembers that trade when it happened. Sorry.
  • If we’re talking about “memorable” trades in Blackhawks history, there is absolutely, positively no way you put a list of ten together and fail to include Steve Larmer ending his consecutive games played streak to force a trade out of town and include the deal that got the Blackhawks Sharpie. No way. I know I’m a Larmer homer (the biggest, some might say) but that deal was the beginning of the dismantling of the Blackhawks’ great core in the early 1990s and saw a legitimate fan favorite leave town when people still cared about the team.
  • Finally, we’re now only eight days away from the Chicago Bears playing a meaningful game. And I am very quickly falling in love with the confidence coming from Justin Fields. Let’s hope he can back it up this season (and the line protects him).
