Picture Day For Bedard and Korchinski, A No. 1 Ranking, Wilson Joins Penguins, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Connor Bedard and Kevin Korchinski are in Virginia this week for the NHLPA / Upper Deck Rookie Showcase. The event gives Upper Deck a chance to get photos of the top new players in the NHL (this season, in theory) to use on trading cards at some point this year. It also gave us a chance to see the two faces of the Blackhawks’ future together in the Indian head sweater. I cannot wait for these two to be in Chicago together!

  • I noticed in the image above and the one below that the Blackhawks’ sweaters being worn by Bedard and Korchinski did not have a patch for Rocky Wirtz on them. I assume there will be one this season. Perhaps Upper Deck didn’t want them in the shots for rookie cards?
  • Another quick reminder of Bedard’s filthy release. I cannot wait to see this against NHL opponents.
  • On Wednesday morning, Mark Lazerus at published a piece about the behind-the-scenes Bedard we haven’t seen much yet. Lazerus describes Bedard’s seemingly robotic exterior that media have seen thus far in his hockey career; he’s a polished professional athlete when the mics turn on, no matter his age and lack of NHL experience. And he asked him why — and how — he stays so level in front of the cameras and bright lights. And his response is why fans in this town are going to love Bedard more as he goes from the highly-touted prospect to the face of the Blackhawks franchise.
  • “People don’t see the behind-the-scenes stuff. I’m not saying that I’m not a calm guy. I think I am. But I care so much about hockey. I expect a lot of myself, and I want to do well and help my team win. But when I’m getting asked questions, it’s just, you know, giving an answer. I don’t want to sound rude at all, but what the outside world and reporters and whatn🌸ot say, it doesn’t really have any effect on me. It’s great for the game to have (people talking about hockey), but for me, I focus on myself, my team and my family.

“Of course, I want to be a great player. And I ha💝ve a lot of expectations for myself, a lot of pressure on myself. But that outside 🔯noise is something that you keep on the outside.”

  • Bedard and Korchinski, predictably, played a prominent role in the Blackhawks being ranked the by Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff. I noted when we discussed the rankings from The Athletic that their analysts aren’t as high on Drew Commesso long-term, but Ellis mentions both Commesso and Adam Gajan as potential starters in net down the road.
  • This is great news, not just for the Pittsburgh Penguins but for hockey fans in general. Blackhawks Hall of Famer Doug Wilson, who stepped away from his role as the long-time general manager of the San Jose Sharks to deal with some health issues, is back in the game. The Pens announced he’s joining the organization as a senior advisor to Kyle Dubas on Wednesday morning.
  • Finally, the Cubs are adding another arm to their bullpen on Wednesday. And his last name is a lie when you see him on the mound.
