Covers For Connor, Korchinski’s Opportunity, Cheli and Theo, Q and Stan, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

This is our FINAL weekend without some kind of hockey happening. If you’re excited about Connor Bedard coming to Chicago, get your credit/debit card ready because the parade of magazine covers featuring the new face of the Blackhawks is only beginning. Friday saw the reveal of The Hockey News‘ annual Meet The New Guys Issue.

  • Those of us who were at Fifth Third Arena to chat with Chris Chelios about his upcoming jersey retirement on Friday morning were able to catch a brief glimpse of Bedard on the ice with some future teammates. No names and not many numbers involved, and a few jerseys of other teams (both NHL and European) at what appeared to be a light, optional skate before the Blackhawks’ prospects report for duty next week.
  • After he talked to the media for about 7 minutes (I’m not making it up, I’ve got the audio), Chelios apparently got in a car and drove north a few miles and spent the afternoon in the bleachers at Wrigley Field with Theo Epstein. Not a bad Friday.
  • Mark Lazerus tracked down Kevin Korchinski at the NHLPA / Upper Deck Rookie Showcase this week and talked to the future Blackhawks defenseman about the coming season. Korchinski is still young; he doesn’t turn 20 until next June. Because of that, his options are back to Seattle in the WHL or in the NHL. And there’s certainly a case to be made that he probably could have seen some NHL action last season. But, again, the Blackhawks were patient and allowed him to go back to Seattle and have a dominant season that included a gold medal at the World Juniors and a WHL championship alongside fellow Blackhawks prospects Colton Dach and Nolan Allan. So what’s keeping him from making the NHL this fall?
  • “[Making the Blackhawks’ NHL roster] would be the best-case scenario,” Korchinski said. “But they’ve got a plan for me, and I trust in whatever they want to do with me. (If) they believe that’s sending me to juniors, then that’s where I want to be. Whatever they think is best for me.”

  • Let’s watch a time-lapse video of the ice getting installed and painted for the coming season, shall we?
  • Eric Engels of Sportsnet was on the case in Rosemont on Friday morning when former Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville and GM Stan Bowman about what they have learned in the wake of being indefinitely banned from the league. Laz talked to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who would not offer any specifics about what Q and Bowman had to say but he did confirm it is still ultimately his decision if either gets to return to the NHL in any capacity.
  • “That was about leadership and responsibility and about, if something does come up, how t꧂o hꦗandle things thoroughly,” Arizona Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong told Engels. “You have to address it, investigate it, and it’s your responsibility as a leader to go above and beyond to make sure it’s dealt with. And that the league’s perspective, too.”

  • More junior teams are getting their preseasons rolling. Blackhawks’ third-round pick Nick Lardis had a nice night. I was reading along the stat line like “One goal, nice. Two assists, also nice. Plus-three, cool. TEN SHOTS ON NET? Love it.”
  • Finally, Bear all the way Down!
