Prospects Reporting, Off-Ice Hires, New Captains for the Canucks and Jets, Krug Hurt, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Tomorrow people! Tomorrow the Blackhawks will have prospects on the ice together for the first practice before heading to Minnesota for the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase games against the Wild and Blues. I cannot wait to get back to the rink and watch some hockey, even if most of the guys involved in this event won’t be on the Blackhawks’ NHL roster this year. With all of the additions to the system in the past two drafts, getting a collection of young talent together to get some run together is exciting. Who skates on which lines? What do the special teams look like? Are there defensemen (multiple?) who skate on their off-side to start the year? So many questions I’m looking forward to watching for answers to this is a fun week to be a Blackhawks fan.

  • If you’re keeping track of how many days remain until to the start of the regular season, you know today is a special number on the countdown calendar.
  • Ben Pope shared a number of off-ice hires and replacements in the Blackhawks organization on Tuesday morning. A couple of note in the scouting department include Cal Filson, who was the director of player personnel with the Seattle Thunderbirds, replacing Rod Braceful and Andrew Contis moving into an amateur scouting role.
  • On Monday, the Vancouver Canucks officially named Quinn Hughes as their new captain. A great honor for him. But… what happens if/when his two brothers recruit him hard enough to join them in New Jersey?
  • Tuesday morning, the Winnipeg Jets followed suit and named Adam Lowry their new captain.
  • The Los Angeles Kings will play in Australia during the preseason, and it looks like they’ll be the focus of the NHL’s version of “Hard Knocks.” It sounds like a pretty cool experience to have the NHL “down under” and this could be a fun watch.
  • Tough news for the Blues, who shared on Tuesday morning that the start of the 2023-24 season is in question for defenseman Torey Krug after he got hurt training. If he isn’t going to be re-evaluated until Oct. 1 that doesn’t give them a lot of time to get him ready for the start of the year IF he’s ready at that point to jump into the mix.
  • Finally, we got our first look at the Cubs’ top prospect in big league action last night in a game that was NOT good for my blood pressure.
