Happy Game Day, Trade Deadline Set, a First Look At The New Fifth Third Arena, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

It’s Game Day for the Blackhawks prospects in Minnesota. Many of the prospects this week talked about the first few practices feeling like the first day of school. To Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson, this must feel like opening presents on a birthday or Christmas. Chicago’s GM has worked hard over the past two regular seasons and summers to accumulate assets to change the trajectory of the future of the franchise, and this will be one of the first significant moments on his timeline. Is this Opening Night in Pittsburgh? No. But seeing ten players from the last two drafts — the first two run by Davidson — on the ice together is big. From what I’ve seen this week, he should be smiling.

  • Reminder: tonight’s game can be seen on Blackhawks.com and the at 6 PM CT.
  • Based on what we saw at practice on Friday morning, look for the Blackhawks’ first power play unit to include Colton Dach, Martin Mišisk, Gavin Hayes, Kevin Korchinski and Connor Bedard. Wyatt Kaiser was quarterbacking the second unit with Ethan Del Mastro, Paul Ludwinski, Nick Lardis and Samuel Savoie.
  • How about an NHL first in since 2018? This was a bit of a surprise to me, but it’s exciting for the league to have this much young skill coming into the game together. And having No. 1 in Chicago is a huge bonus!
  • The NHL announced the trade deadline this season. So go ahead and circle March 8 on your calendar for the day of moving and shaking around the NHL. I don’t anticipate this year’s deadline having as much interest in Chicago with no more “when are they trading Kane/Toews/Domi/etc” questions every day.
  • The Blackhawks announced their plans for the expansion of the Fifth Third Arena on Friday afternoon. We got a first look at a rendering of the championship rink where they’ll host Illinois high school tournaments and youth events. With four sheets and more stands, I want to see the Blackhawks and the city get the World Juniors here asap! The City of Chicago app🃏𓆉roved the plan earlier this week.
  • It’s noteworthy that the Blackhawks would need a second rink with at least 3,500-4,000 seats to host the World Juniors, as to me on Friday. It’s unlikely think rink would reach that capacity, but the area also has the Fox Valley Ice Arena (home of the USHL Chicago Steel — capacity 3,500) and the Allstate Arena in Rosemont (home of the AHL Chicago Wolves — capacity over 18,000) as nearby options for secondary games.
  • The NHLPA released a non-statement from their meeting with the NHL regarding the allegations made earlier this week against Columbus head coach Mike Babcock. They met. Okay… thanks.
  • Finally, this is… something…
