The Chicago Blackhawks will be on the ice at Fifth Third Arena on Thursday! And we now know when they’ll be practicing as they get ready for the coming season. The Hawks released their training camp schedule on Monday afternoon with an important note: it’s still free and open to the public, but you need to reserve your spot by acquiring tickets online. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson will meet with the media to open the new year later this morning. I’m sure there will be questions about Connor Bedard, but I’m also interested to see what his takeaways were from the prospect showcase games in Minnesota this past weekend.
With training camp opening this week, we’re closing in on the new-look Blackhawks broadcast booth. Darren Pang takes over the color duties on the television side, bringing him back to where his NHL playing career began. His energy in the booth is contagious so count me as one of those who can’t wait to start counting the “Holy Jumpin!” calls earned by Bedard this season.

On Monday morning, Dom Luszczyszyn, Sean Gentille and Shayna Goldman at published their annual top 125 players list, broken down into four tiers. Two Blackhawks made their list. Connor Bedard ranked in Tier 3, an all-star. Why isn’t he in the top tier (“MVP”) category? A good point here: “How high can you realistically put a player with zero career NHL games?” He ranks just after Mathew Barzal and above the likes of Steven Stamkos, Clayton Keller and Dylan Larkin.
Seth Jones, meanwhile, arrived down the list in his Tier 4, which he describes as: “A top 125 skater. A player that would be a strong support piece within a contending or championship core. A below average top line forward or average top pair defenseman.” This comments from a coach that was included in Jones’ write-up was interesting to me, and noteworthy for fans who are still down on him as a top-pair guy making $9.5M against the cap.
One coach, more bullish on him th♛an anyone, said to put him in 3A: ”If Seth🥂 Jones was in Vegas, he’d be where Alex Pietrangelo is all day long. Shea Theodore, all day long. Dougie Hamilton, Brent Burns — I’d rather have Seth Jones than both those guys.”

Apparently there are organizations in the National Hockey League that still print physical season tickets. And there are some that have fun with the delivery of said season tickets. In Pittsburgh, even Sidney Crosby got into the delivery truck to drop off a package with a family. How many of us at some point met up with friends at a bar to “draft” games as part of a group that bought season tickets? Getting that box in the mail with the new design on the tickets always felt like Christmas. Having it delivered by a future Hall of Famer must have been a dream come true.
