Sunday Off, Kaiser Working, Reichel Developing, Richardson’s Role, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I spent last night at my high school reunion. I won’t say which one, but let’s just say the year is closer to Jeremy Roenick than Stan Mikita. It was a great time with some folks I hadn’t seen in years (decades in some cases). When we had our last somewhat significant reunion five years ago (before the pandemic) there was a lot less talk about the Blackhawks. Like — none. But I had a few people wanting to know how the team looks this year. Which was nice. The Blackhawks are at minimum interesting enough that they’re relevant for social conversation at a high school reunion.

  • The Blackhawks are getting Sunday off to hopefully not watch the Bears (sorry, Luis). It’s been a few days of practices and we’ve discussed some of the things we’ve seen on the ice so far but we’re still waiting for games. Other NHL teams have hit the ice — the Coyotes and Kings have played twice in Australia already — but the Blackhawks don’t get it started until Thursday. At least we have a game this week, right?
  • I think everyone who has watched Wyatt Kaiser since he turned pro last year has been impressed with everything about the young man. It sure looks like he’s working on an NHL roster spot right now; he’s spent the entire first few days of training camp with Seth Jones — which implies he’s working on a top-pair assignment at this point. And he’s looked comfortable there thus far. How he and Jones compliment each other in NHL games will be interesting, but this drill on Saturday had them working against a couple veteran forwards.
  • Lukas Reichel chatted with the media on Saturday and discussed making the move to the NHL — and sticking at center (hopefully). Head coach Luke Richardson has talked about where Reichel needs to work since he went back to Rockford late last season, but everyone in the organization has been incredibly complimentary of Reichel’s work ethic and how he responds to coaching. It looks like he’ll get to start the season centering a line with Philipp Kurashev and Andreas Athanasiou; all three guys have come amount of experience at center in the NHL.
  • A year ago, Reichel was one of the very few forwards who we could point to in the organization — signed, playing in Chicago or Rockford — who was part of the future. And there was a lot of attention paid to his performance when he spent time with the Blackhawks. I know I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: Reichel might be the biggest beneficiary of the arrival of Connor Bedard. He’s a nice player who now has almost nobody paying attention to him outside of the coaches and the other guys in the room. That’s a great situation for a player who’s still only 21. Ben Pope wrote a nice piece about Reichel’s summer of development and where his game needs to go in his first full NHL season.
  • Scott Powers wrote a good column about Luke Richardson being the right guy for the Blackhawks’ rebuild. As Powers wrote, Richardson was a good enough coach last year that he almost cost the organization a chance to land Bedard. And that was with a roster that was in transition, answering questions about trades every day. This year the Blackhawks are moving on to the second stage of their rebuild. Yes, they’re still interested in collecting draft capital and maximizing their future flexibility, but Powers is spot on when he writes: “It’s about continuing and building off what Richardson did last season, but it’s even more largely about player development.
  • Frankly, I cannot wait to see what Richardson can do with more talent and more lineup consistency. And this year we should see more of both on the NHL roster. I don’t anticipate as much of a fire sale at the trade deadline, and the youth movement has officially begun with young players moving up to the NHL and some other prospects entering the pro ranks for the first time in Rockford.
  • How about an Ilya Safonov goal from the KHL?
  • Have I mentioned Marian Hossa is in town?
  • Finally, the Bears should be over tanking (don’t we wish!) but they can cheer against the Panthers to be awful. Blackhawks fans are well aware of watching other teams help/hurt draft picks with their performance, and the Bears own another first rounder in 2024 that belonged to a bad team.
