Felcman Heading Home, Selfish Reichel, Unselfish Dickinson, Nazar Noted, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Before we jump into some more thoughts from Monday’s scrimmage — read my initial reactions here — an update on Tuesday’s practice. After the benches were honestly too crowded on Monday, head coach Luke Richardson said they might mix things up a little before they do it again. Well, they are on Tuesday. The schedule provided by the team indicates Team A will scrimmage Team B (rosters coming later) at 10 AM, followed by a Team C practice at 11. A few of the guys talked about not getting many shifts (3-5 for most lines/pairs) on Monday so it looks like they’ll try to change that up and get a bigger sample size today.

  • On Tuesday morning the Blackhawks announced forward Jiri Felcman has been returned to the SCL Tigers of the National League (Switzerland). Felcman, a third-round pick this summer, wasn’t playing for the NHL or AHL clubs and, frankly, there isn’t enough ice as it is so this makes sense. From what I saw of Felcman it was clear that he has really good size (6-4, 200) but his skating needs work. He looked like a Jeep that jumped on the ice with a group of Maseratis at times. I’ll be keeping an eye on his season overseas.
  • Remember when I wrote that Lukas Reichel needs to be more selfish this season? Richardson has said something similar without using the word “selfish.” After scoring twice in the scrimmage, to describe his approach this season:
  • Last year I had so many chances. Like when we had 2-on-1, I tried to pass it. Feel like this year I’ll try to shoot it more; be more selfish. Sometimes I’m too nice. Try to make my teammates better and sometimes you’ve just got to shoot it and shoot with confidence.

  • Here’s Seth Jones talking about Kevin Korchinski developing some confidence at the NHL level during training camp. The coaches have talked about him working on discerning when to jump into the rush and when not to and knowing that forwards might want to come back to him with the puck. It’s worth noting Richardson pointed out one example of Jones not hitting Taylor Hall with an exit pass that both the coach and the forward thought was there but didn’t happen. Jones might have some learning to do with a LOT more speed in the lineup for the Blackhawks this season.
  • Ryan Donato on Connor Bedard after the Blackhawks scrimmaged yesterday:
  • Usually good players like that tend to make other players around them better, as well. He has definitely shown that. He’s making plays with everybody on the ice, and I don’t think it’s too hard to get him the puck to get open or get him the puck to score.

  • A reminder for those scoring at home: Jason Dickinson is now No. 16 (hello, Marcus Kruger). He gave 17 to Nick Foligno. He was asked about giving up the number after the scrimmage on Monday and said it was a no-brainer.
  • It was pretty simple, pretty straightforward. I knew who Foligno was and that he was already 17 so I was just waiting for the call basically. … I could have reached out first, I guess, and said just have it. … [I] said have it, I don’t care, it’s yours. No big deal. I’ll find something else. And 16 was available and that was my first number in Dallas so I said, sure, perfect.”

  • Speaking of Dickinson, I wrote about him being the longest-tenured NHL center on the Blackhawks’ roster yesterday. I love his approach to the game; he was constantly talking about what he was learning from Jonathan Toews last year. Now it’s his turn to impart that knowledge on the new, young centers in the room.
  • After appearing in 15 tough games last year during some of the toughest days for the team on the NHL ice, Arvid Söderblom is looking forward to making a full-time jump to the league this year. Luke Richardson said earlier in camp that the Blackhawks might owe Söderblom a couple wins for solid performances that were wasted last year. But Söderblom knows there’s more work to do to win in the NHL. Ben Pope wrote about his summer regimen and what he’s working on in camp.
  • Some have asked me “are we allowed to like Corey Perry now?” The answer is yes (of course). And this adorable moment should help.
  • In the Prospects Not Here category, Frank Nazar received preseason All-B1G second-team recognition. I’m sure that isn’t high enough for him. A little extra preseason motivation never hurt, right?
  • Because they just made a head coaching change before camp opened, the Columbus Blue Jackets needed to re-fill their coaching roles. Monday they brought in a good one, hiring Mark Recchi as an assistant coach.
  • In the “glad I don’t need to buy one of those” category, we’ve got some Heritage Classic jerseys. And they’re… sure.
  • Finally, we’re into the final season of the Cubs’ season and it’s make-or-break time so let’s all stare at the scoreboard(s)!
