Around the NHL: Hot Seat in Edmonton, Carolina Issues in Net, Injury News, Trade Rumors, More

We’re now heading full speed at Thanksgiving, which is usually a point in the season when teams start getting a good feel for their playoff potential. With that in mind, teams around the league are dealing with injuries and underwhelming performances in different ways. Let’s take a quick skate around the league to see what’s up.

  • The Oilers can only look down at the San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division right now. At 2-7-1 and with a worse goal differential than the Blackhawks, the seventh-place Oilers are a hot mess — and that might be an understatement. So there’s increased talk that they’re one loss away from making a change behind the bench. Good luck with that!
  • Tough news in Carolina on Monday. They brought in goaltender Jaroslav Halak as a free agent tryout before announcing they’re going to be without Freddie Andersen for an undetermined amount of time. The Canes are 7-5-0 and their defense has been surprisingly mediocre; they’ve allowed 42 goals in 12 games. This is a huge blow to their makeup. Defenseman Brett Pesce had surgery a couple weeks ago and is still working his way back.
  • Other Injury Updates

  • The New York Rangers lost Adam Fox to LTIR this weekend.
  • Buffalo placed defenseman Mattias Samuelsson on IR this weekend and center Dylan Cozens is day-to-day.
  • Philadelphia moved defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen to LTIR this weekend and are without goaltender Carter Hart because of a mid-body issue.
  • Toronto is down two defensemen right now. They placed Timothy Liljegren on LTIR this weekend and Jake McCabe is dealing with a groin issue. They recalled forward Nicholas Robertson on Monday.
  • Dallas has an injury to deal with of their own. It appears they’ll be dressing seven defensemen for now.
  • Trade Rumors

  • Columbus has making calls to clear some roster spots. Right now they have Kent Johnson in the AHL and Cole Sillinger is nearing his limit to be waiver-exempt if they want to send him down. And Johnny Gaudreau was benched for the third period this weekend because of his effort — gulp! Winnipeg and Philadelphia have been scouting the Jackets.
  • Caps winger Anthony Mantha has a $5.7 million cap hit this year, the final season of his current contract. But Washington is once again trying to relocate him. The 29-year-old has two points in nine games this season.
