Lineup Shuffling, Huge Nights for Slaggert and Nazar, More Prospect Production, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

On Saturday the Blackhawks made only one roster move to help with the three injuries they suffered on Thursday night. Isaak Phillips gets a trip to Florida and Jarred Tinordi is on IR. The Blackhawks will get a second chance in eight days to see what the Panthers have for them. This will be interesting because they ran the defending Eastern Conference champs out of the United Center last weekend. They know each other fairly well; the Blackhawks have only played twice in the full week since they last played. And this is the Blackhawks’ only game between back-to-back Thursday games against the Lightning.

Reminder: the Blackhawks play at Noon CT today.

  • The bad news: Athanasiou and Hall won’t play Sunday afternoon. The good news: neither landed on IR. Hall’s knee looked bad on Thursday night, so it’s encouraging that they’re both going staying off IR for now. We’ll see if they’re available for practice Tuesday when they return to the ice in Chicago.
  • For their part, the Panthers dominated Carolina on Friday night. Sasha Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe each had one goal and one assist in the win. They will likely want to right the wrong of their ugly loss in Chicago eight days ago.
  • I wrote about Martin Misiak on Friday. Entering Saturday’s games, he ranked 24th in the OHL in faceoff wins and was at 51 percent for the season — right behind Paul Ludwinski (who was at 51.9 percent at the dot). It’s good to see a couple center prospects performing well in the circle in the OHL thus far.
  • Misiak and Erie faced Gavin Hayes and Flint on Saturday night. And it was Flint that took the overtime win with Hayes scoring the game-tying goal inside the final four minutes of regulation. Misiak was pointless but won 9 of 18 faceoffs. Hayes put five shots on goal in the win.
  • How about a close-up look at a Nick Lardis goal in the OHL from last night?
  • Frank Nazar came into Saturday’s games with 105 faceoffs won, tied for 17th in NCAA. He was winning 56.8 percent of his faceoffs as well, and got bumped up to Michigan’s top line against Minnesota this weekend. Michigan won Saturday night’s game in a shootout (officially a 2-2 tie) and Nazar assisted on the first goal and scored the second. Over the two games against Minnesota this weekend, Nazar scored twice, added an assist and won 25 of 38 faceoffs.
  • Landon Slaggert had three assists as Notre Dame finished a weekend sweep of Ohio State in South Bend.
  • Ryan Greene had a power play assist and won 8 of 11 faceoffs in a 6-1 Boston University win over UMass-Lowell.
  • Aidan Thompson picked up an assist while winning 8 of 13 faceoffs for Denver in an 8-4 bounce-back win for the Pios.
  • A reminder of how the Blackhawks left us on Thursday night:
  • Finally, with no Bears today let’s spend a moment appreciating Alex Caruso’s defensive prowess. He’s fun to watch.
