Angel Reese doesn’t need any time off.
The Chicago Sky’s emerging superstar is the latest player . The brand-new basketball league announced Reese’s commitment on Wednesday morning, making her the 10th WNBA player to join. She will compete alongside Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Lloyd, Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Kahleah Copper, and Jackie Young.
Angel Reese Joins New Basketball League
To be absolutely clear, Angel Reese and the other names listed above remain fully committed to the WNBA. Unrivaled will be a supplementary league that takes place during the league’s offseason, which is when many WNBA players normally head to play overseas.
The goal of Unrivaled is to provide some of the best players in the world with an opportunity to remain in the States, as well as put even less wear and tear on their bodies with a shorter season. Most notable, however, is the pay structure. The league was created by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier with the goal of offering the highest annual salary in women’s basketball history. Unrivaled will also provide ownership equity to all of the 30 players who choose to sign on this season.
The format of the league will also look quite different. Players will compete in a 3-on-3 style that is held on a compressed court design. There will be a total of just six teams with five players on each team. Unrivaled also plans to hold a one-on-one contest in February to crown the top one-on-one player in t🉐he league. Games are expected to officially tip off in January of 2024!
Of course, the mere formation of this league is making history, but Angel Reese will be a big part of that. She is now the first rookie to ever commit to the program, thus potentially paving the✅ way for future high-profile rookies to choose this path over playing across the pond.
