Angel Reese has only played 32 WNBA games, an🍒d she is already sitting at the top oꦛf the record book.
The Chicago Sky star grabbed 19 rebounds against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday afternoon, officially setting a new league record for the most rebounds ever in a single season. Sylvia Fowles previously held the honor with 404 boards in 2018. Reese is now up to💯 418 rebounds with eight more games to go in the regular season.
What an amazing first-year accomplishment.
Angel Reese Makes More History
The emerging superstar didn’t need long to start shattering records during her rookie campaign. Reese made history with the WNBA’s most consecutive double-doubles back in July, surpassing former Chicago Sky Champion Candace Parker. L🃏ooking nothing short of dominant on the glass, it quickly became clear that setting the record could be within reach if the forward stayed healt💜hy.
Fast forward to the last six games, and Reese has been on an absolute tear. She has averaged 17.7 rebounds per game d𒁃uring this stretch, which has included three straight games wit💦h 20 or more rebounds.
“That’s something that a lot players don’t want to do,” Reese said of her rebounding . “Some people think that it’s because I get my own rebounds, but statistically it’s not. A lot of people think it’s because I’m the tallest on the court when I’m not the tallest on the court. Just being able to go down there, being able to bang, doing things that a lot of people don’t want to do. Defense and rebounding wins championships, and I’ve won championships at every level by doing that.”
Rebounding may not be a sexy stat, but it’s a vitally important skill. There is a reason many of us can name some of the greatest rebounders of all time (Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, Andre Drummond), and Reese has already started to throw herself into that mix. As she said, some might look for a way to diminish the accomplishment, but this isn’t going to stop her from giving her maximum effort in that department.
I look forward to watching her♐ break her own reco⛎rd again next season!
