Renowned NBA Reporter Adrian Wojnarowski Announces Retirement (UPDATE: What’s Next?)

The way we get our NBA news will never be the same.

In arguably his most shockāœ±ing report yet, Adrian Wojnarowski, 55, announced that he is retiring. One of the most well-known sports insiders in history that he is leaving ESPN and the news industry altogether. The announcement comes only weeks before the start of the NBA season.

Adrian Wojnarowski Says Goodbye

As Wojnarowski notes in his statement, his media career staā–Ørted 37 years ago with the Hartford Courant. The St. Bonaventure graduate has only climbed the totem pole ā™Žever since with his renowned column writing and reporting.

Wojnarowski really burst onto the scene as one of the top “scoopers” during his time at Yahoo Sports. He joined the organization in 2007 before departing for ESPN in 2017. All things considered, Wojnarowski is firmly on the list of names who forever changed the sports media industry. He helped turn social media into a go-to source for major trades and signings. Whenever there was big news on the horizon, the expectation was that Wojnarowski would have it first on Twitter. Now, it’s become standard protocol for many reporters to promptly share their scoop over social media before publishing a formal article.

Look, the fact that “Woj bomb” became a generic term for nearly every sports fan speaks volumes about the man’s impact. Knowing that we’re now about to head into an NBA season without him is a very odd feeling. Also, while I know Shams Charania has become a second go-to source for breaking basketball news, Woj’s retirement is going to leave quite the void.

With that said, I wish the man nothing but the best. His line of work is one of the most exhausting in the sports media industry, and I’m glad he will finally have some time to relax. There is no doubt he earned it.

UPDATE (10:16 a.m. CT)

Shortly after Wojnarowski’s announcement, his alma mater announced that he would join the St. Bonaventure basketball program as the General Manager.

“In his role as general manager, Wojnarowski will serve the coaching staff in managing a wide range of responsibilities including name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities and as a liaison with collectives; transfer portal management; recruit, family and alumni player relationships; professional player programs; and program fundraising,” St. Bonaventure Athletics shared.
