Ownership Frustration, The Nikola Vucevic Trade Scars, Sky Season Ends, and Other Bulls Bullets

In case you missed it, a Jerry R⛎einsdorf hit piece swept through the Chicagoland area this week. While the focus was on the historically putrid Chicago White Sox, it was impossible not to draw connections back to the Chicago Bulls.

You can read some of our thoughts below. Sorry for ruining your Friday.

  • I saw a handful of fans mention that Reinsdorf’s specific comment about wanting the White Sox to win more than the Bulls is nothing particularly new or shocking. This is true. We’ve long known that Reinsdorf is a diehard baseball fan. But I’d argue the problem isn’t that Jerry prefers one sport over the other. The big fat ugly problem is that he is perfectly comfortable sharing this with the masses. All things considered, he is saying the quiet part out loud. An owner of two professional sports franchises should never tell people that he wants to see one of those franchises win more than the other. This is especially true when we consider how awful both teams have been in recent years. Even if the Bulls had won a championship within the last three seasons, stating that you don’t care about that team winning as much would be a slap in the face to fans. You don’t pick a favorite child.
  • The even more absurd part of this is that Reinsdorf said he cares more about the 117-loss White Sox winning games than the Bulls. If that’s true … how low are things allowed to go at the United Center? Would he extend Arturas Karnisovas after a 1-81 season? That one win showed we’re trending in the right direction!
  • With Adrian Wojnarowski shockingly retiring this week, the Chicago Bulls by sharing a few of his biggest Bulls-related Woj bombs. Not only did they include the trade for Zach LaVine near the top of the thread, but they wrapped things up with a carefully selected Woj tweet about the Nikola Vucevic trade. Instead of using the post that featured the full package, the Bulls chose Woj’s tweet that read: “Orlando is trading Nikola Vucevic Al-Farouq Aminu to Chicago, sources tell ESPN.” What about the rest, guys!?
  • The Nikola Vucevic trade will forever grind my gears. I’ve been more supportive of the big men than most, but even I can’t deny the front office got fleeced. Wendell Carter Jr. and two first-round picks – one of which turned into a max player in Franz Wagner – is a brutal price to pay for someone who immediately became a third option. If the Bulls had gone on to win a couple of playoff series, we’d remember things a lot differently. But the fact of the matter is that Vucevic has one five-game first-round exit to show for and some pretty awful shooting splits. There aren’t many worse trades in the NBA over the last decade than this one.
  • I’d also feel at least somewhat differently about this trade if the Bulls showed that they had learned from their mistake. We certainly can’t say that’s the case. Whether it be the complete absence of deals over the last several trade deadlines OR the inability to turn Alex Caruso into anything more than a direct player swap, the Bulls have come up short in the trade market every step of the way. I have very little faith in this group to get the right kind of transactions done, and this is pretty terrifying when we consider they are now undertaking a rebuild.

  • HoopsHype documented which players . It’s an oddly fascinating list, but you’re not going to be shocked by who ranks No. 1.
  • The Chicago Sky’s season came to an unceremonious end on Wednesday night. An 87-54 loss to the Sun pushed the Atlanta Dream into the final playoff spot. On the one hand, this is pretty disappointing. Even if the Sky would’ve gone up against the juggernaut Liberty in a shot three-game series, I would’ve liked to see Kamilla Cardoso and Chennedy Carter get the postseason experience. On the other hand, this outcome sure feels like what the organization wanted. They traded away Marina Mabrey at the deadline and saw Angel Reese end her season early. The team finished the year 2-12 and will now have a chance at a top 3 pick in this year’s draft. For a roster that is still very much a work in progress, adding to the young core is probably still the most important.
  • Congrats, Nick!
  • Why are we doing this?
