Training Camp Countdown, Can LaVine & Vucevic Set a Good Example? Cardoso Heads Overseas, And Other Bulls Bullets

Chicago Bulls Training Camp Countdown: 10 Days

  • The Bulls are on the brink of their most interesting training camp in years. While the win-loss column may not be at the top of mind, there will be a handful of crucial storylines to follow in the coming weeks. Of course, the most important may be how Zach LaVine integrates back into the locker room. Many expected that the two-time All-Star would begin this season elsewhere. All signs also continue to point toward both parties wanting a divorce. However, the two have been forced to stay in their unhappy marriage for now, and there is no question this could lead to some awkward tension behind the scenes.
  • Indeed, the last thing this organization needs is more drama, particularly as it undertakes a rebuild. An uncomfortable power dynamic or angsty locker room isn’t going to make player development any easier. The Bulls will need some legitimate buy-in from LaVine both on and off the court. And we can say the same about Nikola Vucevic, who has already expressed some uncertainty about which direction the front office has decided to go. Can I understand why these two veterans may be annoyed with their current situation? Absolutely. But expressing that frustration isn’t necessarily going to do them or the organization any good. Instead, showing they can be strong teammates and true professionals will only help ignite their respective trade markets.
  • So what is Zach LaVine’s role going to be this year? Will the Bulls revert to their late-2010s style and give him the car keys? Is LAVine going to have to take a back seat at times to young ball-handlers like Coby White and Josh Giddey? Might Billy Donovan try to stagger him into the second unit to increase his scoring opportunities? The Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley wrote about that last possibility in a recent article that you can read .
  • Considering White’s big leap forward last season, it sure feels like the Bulls will have to also find a way to give him a chance to run the show at times. Perhaps this means empowering White by staggering him into the second unit to serve as a leader of that young bench mob. This would also allow for LaVine and Vucevic to spend most of their time playing a two-man game together. If one thing is for sure, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bulls try out a handful of different rotations to begin the year. This roster is in a pretty odd place, and it’s likely going to require some constant tinkering from Donovan.

  • Kamilla Cardoso is headed overseas this offseason. The Sky’s No. 3 overall pick from last offseason shared during her exit meeting with reporters that she will suit up for the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. , Cardoso plans to focus on both her mid-range game and finishing around the rim. She should have plenty of opportunities to do that as one of the biggest WNBA names in China.
  • Cardoso finished this year averaging 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game. The former South Carolina star looked more and more comfortable as the regular season dragged on, proving that she should remain a focal point of this Sky rebuild moving forward. With that said, Cardoso undoubtedly has a lot to work on if she wants to keep up with some of the WNBA’s best bigs. She struggled at times to use her overpowering frame to her advantage and could find herself a bit off-balance in the post. Learning how to better finish through contact at the pro level will be key moving forward.
  • Speaking of WNBA action, the ! Caitlin Clark will appear in her first-ever postseason game at 2:00 p.m. CT against the Sun.
  • Chuck Swirsky confirmed that his son, T.C., is set to become the next head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies’ G-League affiliate. Congrats to the Swirsky fam!
  • Happy birthday to one of the best players in Bulls franchise history!
  • So where does Artis Gilmore belong on the all-time Bulls ranks? I think we can all agree Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Derrick Rose all comfortably sit ahead of him. Dennis Rodman probably has to be named next, but I believe the list is rather darn open after that. Some might want to put another champ next like Horace Grant or Toni Kukoc, which is fine with me. However, I could pretty easily be convinced that Gilmore deserves Top 5. The seven-foot-two HOFer averaged 19.3 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game over his seven seasons with the franchise. He also shot 58.7 percent from the field! Gilmore remains the team’s all-time leader in field goal percentage and blocks.
