More on the Duke’s Mayo Bowl
The Charlotte-based college football bowl game, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, has been held at Bank of America Stadium since 2002. It had various names in the past, starting as the Queen City Bowl a🦹nd undergoing changes like the Continental Tire Bowl, Meineke Car Care Bowl, and Belk Bowl, until it settled on its current name.
Originally, the bowl featured matchups between the No. 5 selected Atlantic Coast Conference team and the No. 3 selected American Athletic Conference (AAC) team. However, the breakup of the AAC in 2013 led to changes in the bowl’s matchups.
Belk sponsored the bowl 🅷from 2011 to 2019, and in 2019, Duke’s Mayonnaise took over sponsorship. The current format showcases the second pooled selection from the ACC against the second pooled selection from the Southeastern Confere🌜nce.
One unique tradition introduced by Duke’s Mayo is the post-gam🅰e mayo shower for winning coaches, replacing the conventional Gatorade shower. Starting in 2020, the ACC’s opponent alternates between the Big Ten Conference and SEC through 2025. The 2020 game gained social media attention when the winning team’s quarterback, Graham Mertz of Wisconsin, accidentally broke the glass trophy.
