2024 Rose Bowl Matchup: Michigan vs Alabama

Let’s dive into each team’s season and see how they got to the College Football Playoff.

Michigan (13-0 overall, 9-0 in Big Ten)

The Wolverines finished the regular season for the second straight year and claimed its third Big Ten Championship in a row this season. After taking heat for its non-conference schedule of ECU, UNLV, and Bowling Green, Michigan won the rest ☂of its games including victories over top-10 oppܫonents Ohio State and Penn State.

The Wolverines dealt with multiple Jim Harbaugh suspensions stemming from a recruiting violation and over illegally scouting opponent’s signals. It’s been a wild year for Michigan but they finished 13-0 and they are in the College Football Playoff for the third year in a row.

Quarterback JJ McCarthy threw for 19 touchdowns and 2,630 yards while the team has a strong backfield of Blake Corum a🗹nd Donovan Edwards. Corum had 1,028 yards with 24 rushing touchdowns while Edwards added 382 yards with 3 touchdowns. Edwards also had 249 yards receiving.

Roman Wilson caught 11 touchdowns on the year and had 662 yards receiving as McCarthy’s top target in 2023.

Alabama (12-1 overall, 8-0 in SEC)

Alabama recovered after a week 2 loss to Texas where the Longhorns went to Alabama and beat the Crimson Tide 34-24. The Crimson Tide have won 11 games in a row including the SEC Championship game vs Georgia. Alabama ended Georgia’s 29-game win streak and kept the Bulldogs from getting a chance to win a third national title in a row.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe came into his own in his first season as a starter. He had a tough task of replacing Bryce Young and Milroe didn’t disappoint. He threw 23 touchdowns while running for 12 touchdowns. The highlight of the year came in a TD pass to Isaiah Bond on 4th and goal from the 31-yard line to beat Auburn 27-24.

Jase McClellan ran for 803 yards and 6 touchdowns. He’s questionable for the bowl game with a foot injury. On the outside, Milroe has weapons in Isaiah Bond and Jermaine Burton. Bond had 621 receiving yards with 4 TDs while Burton had 777 receiving yards and 8 TDs.

    History of the Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl Game, played at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, is an annual American college football bowl game held on January 1 (New Year’s Day). If New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, the game is played on Monday, January 2. Nicknamed “The Granddaddy of Them All,” it has a rich history, starting in 1902 as the Tournament East–West football game.

Since 1947, it has hosted the conference champions from the Big Ten and Pac-12 (or their predecessors). It is a highlight of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association’s “America’s New Year Celebration,” which also includes the historic Rose Parade.

The Rose Bowl Game has🌸 been the higജhest-attended college football bowl game since 1945. Winners receive the Leishman Trophy, named after former Tournament of Roses presidents William L. Leishman and Lathrop K. Leishman.

Over the years, the game has evolved, occasionally serving as the championship game under the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system and becoming part☂ of the College Football Playoff (CFP) since 2015, hosting one of the semifinal games every three years. In non-CFP years, it reverts to its traditional Pac-12/Big Ten matchup, unless the champions from those conferences participate in the College Football Playoff.

The Rose Bowl’s history dates back to 1902, marking the beginning of the tradition of New Year’s Day bowl games and football’s return in 1916 as an annual event.
