College Football Playoff National Championship Odds: Picks & Betting Lines for Michigan vs Washington on January 8, 2024

College football fans, strap yourselves in because we’re hurtling towards a spectacle of epic proportions. The 2024 National Championship stage is set, and it features twꦚo teams facing off after surviving their regular seasons and semifinal matchups unbeaten: the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies.

Both teams arrive undefeated, battle-tested, and hungry for glory. They’ve conquered conference foes, outlasted CFP semifinal giants, and now stand one win away from etching their names in the pantheon of college football history.

Let’s dissect this epic clash head-to-toe, exploring the key storylines, matchups, and X-factors that will leave us on the edge of our seats come Monday night.

Two Undefeated Teams, Two Different Styles

The Washington Huskies are an offensive juggernaut, led by the electric arm of Michael Penix Jr., the nation’s premier passer. Their “Air Raid” attack is a whirlwind of precision throws, acrobatic catches, and relentless scoring. Think fireworks, think pyrotechnics – that’s Washington’s offense. In the Sugar Bowl win over Texas, Penix lit up the Longhorns’ defense with a series of elite throws. Washington’s receiver trio of Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Jalen McMillan can cause headaches for any defense.

The Michigan Wolverines, on the other hand, embody defensive dominance and ball-control offense. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has sculpted a unit that suffocates opponents, wreaks havoc in the backfield, and boasts a knack for clutch turnovers. Their defensive line caused chaos for Alabama’s offensive line in the Rose Bowl. Offensively, Blake Corum is as good of a running back as there is in the nation. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy might not put up the fireworks Penix has thus far, but he makes the big throws in the big moments, and his mobility has been a huge asset.

College Football Playoff National Championship Key Matchups:

Penix vs. Michigan’s secondary: Can Penix weave his magic against the stingiest pass defense in the nation? The Wolverine’s lockdown secondary, led by the ball-hawking Mike Sainristil, will be Penix’s biggest challenge. UW’s dangerous passing attack against this secondary will be such an interesting battle.

Michigan’s ground game vs. Washington’s front seven: Can the Wolverines’ bruising backfield, spearheaded by Blake Corum, crack the formidable Huskies’ defensive line anchored by the disruptive Bralen Trice? Washington’s defense was up and down at times this year, but they’ve gotten much better as the year has gone on, and when Trice is on he’s a tough matchup for anyone. Corum and fellow running back Donovan Edwards, however, present the best running-back duo in college football.

Special teams: Don’t underestimate the importance of field goals and punts in a tightly contested championship game. Michigan’s special teams struggled in their Rose Bowl win over Alabama. Two muffed punts and a missed field goal nearly cost them the game. Will they clean that up prior to Monday’s clash with Washington?

This game transcends the immediate battle for the trophy. It marks the final chapter of the four-team playoff era, paving the way for the expanded 12-team format next season. For Michigan, it’s an opportunity to end a 27-year championship hiatus and silence the “Harbaugh can’t win the big one” narrative. For UW, they can send the PAC-12 out with a national title and set the tone for their Big Ten arrival next season. Which of these two historical programs will come out on top?

Prediction: They say that styles make fights, and wow do we have two styles of football that should make for a great fight! Can the Huskies’ offensive line hold up against the Wolverines’ pass rush that has been relentless all season? Will Harbaugh’s crew be able to control the ball on offense and dominate the Huskies up front? I think both teams will find success on offense. It’s a high point total for Michigan’s ball-control offense, but I think they’ll put up points. Pick: Over 56.5
