Maybe it was a bad omen that the Cubs loaded the bases in each of the first two innings against Paul Skenes (and two more on base in the third) but did not score a run. Or maybe it’s not about omens; maybe it’s just that when you miss out on clear opportunities to score, you are statistically less likely to win.
To that point, if you score 0 runs, you have a 0.0% chance of winning that night’s game.
Realistically, that was about as good of an outing you could hope for from Kyle Hendricks on short notice. He didn’t quite match Skenes pitch for pitch or anything, but just a couple runs in five innings of work? You’d take that. Even if it wouldn’t have mattered tonight.
Ethan Roberts probably deserves the honors for his two scoreless innings of work, but, just like last night, it’s got that hollow feeling.
