Hey, there’s that red-hot Cubs offense that went missing!
After from Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong in the third inning, the Chicago Cubs are up 7-0 on the Pittsburgh Pirates in tonight’s finale at Wrigley Field.
I-Cubs broadcaster Alex Cohen is on the Marquee broadcast tonight, and I just loved his call of Dansby Swanson’s 14th home run of the season: “Another Dinger for Dansby!” I might just be a sucker for alliteration.
But also … Swanson has been pretty darn hot here lately (that was his 5th homer in his last 15 games), dragging his once putrid slash line just about up to league average (97 wRC+ as of this moment). That, with his defense, is going to make him a 3.7-4.0 WAR player by the end of the year (he’s already at 3.3 before tonight). That is a LONG way from where it looked like his season was headed after April and May.
Meanwhile, PCA, who had already doubled earlier tonight … I mean, what else is there to say about him right now? The Cubs’ 22-year-old rookie is lighting the world on fire and has been for about two full months. So, so good. That was his 8th homer of the season, and it was not a cheapy: 104 MPH, 417 feet.
