CUBS LINEUP — There’s an alternate reality where a September Cubs-Yankees matchup at Wrigley Field is actually a big deal. But today, with Caleb Williams starting his first game for the Bears and the Cubs dropping back into obscurity on the precipice of a sweep, I do not think this game will have much attention.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Ian Happ, LF
- Dansby Swanson, SS
- Seiya Suzuki, DH
- Cody Bellinger, 1B
- Mike Tuchman, RF
- Isaac Paredes, 3B
- Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
- Miguel Amaya, C
- Miles Mastrobuoni, 2B
It look෴s a bit like a White Flag lineup, right? No Michael Busch, no Nico Hoerner. Cody Bellinger moves to first, opening up right field for Mike Tauchman. And Miles Mastrobuoni enters to face Gerrit Cole.
Yeah, Craig Counsell is calling it, folks.
New York Yankees Lineup:
- Gleyber Torres, 2B
- Juan Soto, RF
- Aaron Judge, CF
- Austin Wells, C
- Giancarlo Stanton, DH
- Jazz Chisholm Jr., 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Anthony Volpe, SS
- Alex Verdugo, LF
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs:
Jameson Taillon’s last start was his best of the season, with seven shutout innings against the Pirates. He allowed just three hits and one walk in that one, all while generating a 59.1% groundball rate and globs of weak contact (80.3 MPH average EV). Taillon had been on a pretty rough run before that, dating all the way back to the deadline, so it was nice to see him get back on track. He’ll be a big part of the Cubs rotation again next season, so here’s hoping his back stays healthy and he can finish the season strong.
New York Yankees:
Gerrit Cole’s 2024 season didn’t begin until June 19, but after a couple of settling-in performances, he started to look more like his usual self: 2.95 ERA, 28.5 K% over his last 11 starts. Most recently, he struck out nine Rangers, walking only one, in six innings of one-run ball out in Arlington. Maybe he’s not peak-Gerrit-Cole, but he’s still a really good pitcher.
