CUBS VS DODGERS — Maybe if the Cubs finished the sweep in L.A. and didn’t drop that winnable game against the Pirates, they’d still have a shot at this thing. But they lost both and still sit 5.0 games out, behind two teams, with just 16 games to go. Sure, if they win out (or maybe even go like 14-2) they might still have a shot, but that’s pretty much the only way to do it at this point. That said, the schedule does hit another soft spot starting this weekend.
The Rockies are the second-worst team in the National League, though it is always more difficult to play them in Colorado (where they have a .464 W%) than it is anywhere else (.295 W%). Still, they’re an awful team with nothing to play for but draft order.
Moreover, the Rockies are getting three Cubs righties this weekend — Assad, Taillon, Hendricks — and they’re the NL’s worst offense versus right-handed pitching this season: .245/.307/.401 (84 wRC+, 89 wRC+ at Coors).
Only the White Sox have been worse in MLB.
On the flip side, the Rockies are starting two lefties this series, which bodes well for the Cubs, who’ve had the fifth-best offense versus left-handed pitching in the second half of the season. Good company, too:
wRC+ Leaderboard vsLHP in the Second Half
- Phillies: 146 wRC+
- D-Backs: 124 wRC+
- Dodgers: 115 wRC+
- Braves: 114 wRC+
- Cubs: 113 wRC+
