Hayden Wesneski is Reportedly at Wrigley Field Today

The Cubs have another arm at the ballpark today, and we’ll see if he’s being activated.

With Iowa, Wesneski put up good numbers, but that was generally expected. He’s demonstrated he can cruise at that level at this point. Once he was fully healthy and there was a opening in the bullpen, he was going to return. That might be now.

Technically, Wesneski doesn’t have to be returning to the roster just yet – he could be there to throw for the coaching staff or simply to be around the team. I suspect it’s a return, though. I wonder if, having pitched back-to-back days, Jack Neely is getting optioned out.

Out since July 19 with a forearm strain, Wesneski returns to 3.94 ERA over 61.2 innings (7 starts, 18 relief appearances). He has had some great outings this year, but he’s had too many spoiled by the long ball (same as last year). The 26-year-old swing man figures to be up and down, and in-and-out of the rotation as needed for perhaps another year or so, unless he really breaks out in one role or the other.
