CUBS LINEUP — Happy Friday 1:20 at Wrigley Field! There’s actually one more of these (vs the Reds) next weekend. So no need for farewells just yet. In the meantime, the Cubs won the opener against the Nationals last night, pushing them back to three games over .500. With nine games left, they need to win only three more to lock in a .500 season. If that does anything for you … here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup for Game 2 against the Nationals.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Ian Happ, LF
- Dansby Swanson, SS
- Cody Bellinger, RF
- Seiya Suzuki, DH
- Michael Busch, 1B
- Nico Hoerner, 2B
- Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
- Patrick Wisdom, 3B
- Christian Bethancourt, C
There are a few small changes in today’s Cubs lineup. Michael Busch re-joins after sitting last night, but his replacement, Patrick Wisdom, is staying in to play third base.
Wisdom will b꧅at eighth, pushing Pete Crow-Armstrong up to seventh. Other than that, Christian Bethancourt comes back in for Miguel Amaya and everyone else is where you expect to find them.
Washington Nationals Lineup:
- TBA
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs:
After a really frustrating stretch that began on 🍸July 29 and lasted nearly a ☂month (6.55 ERA over six starts and 33.0 IP), Jameson Taillon has officially turned it around. Take a look at his last three starts, one of which was against a good Yankees squad and another at Coors Field (where pitching is very tough):
vsPIT: 7.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K
vsNYY: 6.0 IP, 6H, 1ER, 1BB, 6K
@COL: 6.0 IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 6K
That’s much more like the guy we saw in the front-half of the year: 2.96 ERA (3.80 FIP) over his first 17 starts and 100.1 IP.
Washington Nationals:
Former Cub Trevor Williams made his way from Chicago to New York (Mets) and eventually to the Nationals, where he’s been since the start of 2023. Unfortunately, his career in D.C. has been uneven. Last year, he was very available (30 starts), but had horrible results (5.55 ERA). This year, he’s got great results and peripherals (2.22 ERA, 2.82 FIP), but he’s taken the mound only 11 times. And all eleven happened before the end of May, when a flexor strain sat him down for multiple months. Williams just completed a couple of minor league rehab starts, and they went fairly well (combined): 7.1 IP, 8H, 2ER, 1BB, 5K.
