Late on Monday, it was announced that Chargers had agreed to a gigantic contract with quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert is signing a five-year, $262.5M deal, which just slightly surpasses Lamar Jackson’s April extension with the Ravens. The new deal is set to run through the 2029 NFL season, with Herbert receiving $218.7M in guarantees.
Herbert had two years remaining on his rookie contract, which was scheduled to pay him $8.5M this season. Herbert, 25, was a first-round pick (sixth overall) by the Chargers in 2020. He’s started 49 of a possible 50 games, throwing for 14,089 yards, 94 touchdowns, and only 35 interceptions. Herbert also has rushed for 683 yards and six TDs in his three seasons.
Over that three-year span, Justin Herbert has finished as the overall QB9, QB2, and QB11 in fantasy terms, and he is still surround𝐆ed by an explosive group of skill position players heading into 2023.

Justin Herbert, Quarterback, Los Angeles Chargers,
Justin Herbert had a relatively down year in 2022 after blowing the roof off of the 2021 season, but some touchdown regression was to be expected after he almost threw for 38 the year prior. There are multiple positive factors to consider when hoping for another explosive season, though, not least of which includes a new offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore and the addition of wide receiver Quentin Johnston in the first round of the NFL Draft. His fantasy points accrued through his legs took a slight drop (3.7 rushes/gm to 3.2), but not enough that we can’t expect a few points here and there from his feet.
Regardless, where we’re really getting the fantasy boost is from his incredible accuracy.
Los Angeles Chargers current wide receiver depth chart:
- Keenan Allen
- Mike Williams
- Quentin Johnston
- Josh Palmer
- Jalen Guyton
- Derius Davis
Justin Herbert 2023
Herbert has finished as the QB9, the QB2, and the QB12 in his first three seasonsꦍ in the NFL. His 2022 campaign was a disappointment. He set career lows in touchdowns (25), yards per game (279), and yards per attempt (6.8). But the arrival of new OC Kellen Moore should get Herbert back on the right track.
Over the past two seasons, Moore’s offenses in Dallas have finished first and 11th in total yards and first and fourth in points scored. From 2019 to 2021, Dallas finished second, eighthᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ, and second in passing yards. The Chargers were third in passing yards and 13th in points scored last season, but when they had the 🔥chance to hire Moore, they jumped on it.
Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Gerald Everett, and Austin Ekeler are all back, and the Chargers added Quentin Johnson in the draft. Herbert’s QB7 ADP is compl🅷etely reasonable, and he’s one of a handful of quarterbacks with overall QB1 upside.
