Open Championship History
The Open Championship boasts a rich and storied history, tracing its roots back to 1860, making it the oldest of the four major golf championships. Originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, it quickly gained prestige as a test of golfing prowess on the challenging links courses that define the sport’s birthplace. Early champions were predominantly Scottish players, with legendary figures like Willie Park and Old Tom Morris leaving their mark on the tournament’s early years.
As the Open Championship grew in stature, the venue began rotating between various prestigious links courses in Scotland and England. Technological advancementš½s in golf equipment, coupled with the evolution of playing styles, saw the emergence of international sātars. American golfers like Walter Hagen and Ben Hogan began challenging the dominance of British players, while the likes of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus captivated audiences with their charismatic flair and aggressive play.
In recent decades, the championship has seen a global explosion of talent, with South African golfers like Ernie Els and Gary Player leaving their mark, and stars from Asia like Hideki Matsuyama etching their names on the Claret Jug. Today, the Open Championship remains a true test of a golfer’s complete skillset, demanding mastery of links golf and the ability to handle the immense pressure that comes with competing on some of the most historic courses in the world.

Collin Morikawa Top 10 +125 (FanDuel) *included ties
When modeling this course and event out, it just really seems like no one will be able to overpower it off the tee and the only chances to score (even on the easier front nine) are going to be off the back of strong approach shots into these small greens. Collin is not only a former winner of this event (2021 at Royal St George’s), but has been in some of the best form we’ve seen from him in some time. Played well at all three majors so far and looked good last week on the “links-ish” warm-up in Scotland. I’ll be betting him to win, but love this to go along with it. – Andy Molitor
Collin Morikawa T10 +188 (BetRivers)
Few players enter the Open Championship with the combination of elite form and excellent past performance on links courses like Morikawa. He has five top-4 finishes and hasn’t finished worse than 16th over the past three months. He won the Open back in 2021 and just finished 4th on a links hybrid course at the Scottish Open. On a course that demands elite ball-striking on small greens, there are few players that I trust more for a high finish than Morikawa. – Ron Klos
