Englishman Daniel Brown, who entered play on a string of missed cuts, is your first-round lea🦋der at -6 (65).

Royal Troon

The course has undergone some changes✤ since the last championship. Royal Troon now measures almost 7,400 yards from the tips and is a Par-71. The course layout starts with a prevailing downwind for the front nine and becomes longer and more challenging on the back nine, where almost every hole aims for a desired outcome of par.

Keeping the ball in play and positioning it on the fairway is crucial for success at Royal Troon. The club’s motto is “As much by skill as by strength.” Since missing fairways comes with a high penalty, using the driver recklessly can be risky. Especially in potentially windy conditions, shots with too much height and spin can easily get lost in the deep foot-lon♛g fescue rough. A poor angle off the tee can also cause low-binding shots to ru𝔍n through the fairway, resulting in the same outcome. The fairway bunkers, strategically placed around the landing area, pose a significant challenge and can lead to a one-stroke penalty.

In these conditions, hitting and holding the small greens is difficult, even with a wedge. Precise accuracy wไill be crucial in potentially tough conditions. Revetted bunkers protect the narrow front entries of🧜 the greens on several holes, particularly the par 5s, while deep bunkers fortify the sides of the putting surface on other holes.

The greens are a combination of native bentgrass and poa annua and are smaller than those found at other Open rotation courses, averaging only 4,500 square feet per hole. Troon’s greens are typically narrower in the front and larger in the rear, so it’s often better to take an extra club and aim for the center, even when the pins are forward. While the ജputting surfaces are not as undula🙈ting as others, they have subtle movement and can be difficult to hold in firm conditions.
