Castle Pines Golf Club is situated in a pine forest in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It is a Jack Nicklaus design, and at 8,130 yards, it will be the longest course in PGA Tour history. The club’s founder, Jack Vickers, wanted the course to be a western version of Augusta National, urging architect Jack Nicklaus to create a design worthy of a major championship.

Since its establishment in 1981, Castle Pines has seen various changes to its holes to keep up with advancements in technology. The par 72 layout features twisting hole shapes, dramatic elevation changes, elevated multi-tiered greens, numerous water hazards, and the Rocky Mountain air, which allows golf balls to travel around 10% further than they would at sea level. Castle Pines Golf Club has consistently ranked amongst the top 50 of America’s greatest courses.

50 golfers have made it to the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and have secured their spots in all eight Signature events next year. The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week will move on to next week’s Tour Championship. Similar to last week, this is another small-field, no-cut event.

None of the golfers participating this week have played an official round at Castle Pines. Adam Scott is the only one who was on the PGA Tour during the last tournament in 2006, but he did not compete. Colorado native Wyndham Clark has the most experience at Castle Pines𒅌, estimating that he has played there 25-30 times over the years. Clark is in good form, finishing 14th at the Olympics and seventh at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week.

In 1969, Midwest oilman Jack Vickers moved to Denver and discovered the property that would become Castle Pines Golf Club. After 12 years of negotiations with local landowners, Vickers acquired the acreage he needed. He then enlisted Jack Nicklaus as the course architect, and the construction of the golf course began in 1979. The club officia𒉰lly oꦜpened in October of 1981.

The entire course has been renovated since the last “International” in 2006 with assistance from Jack Nicklaus and Total Turf company, including new bunkers, rebuilt tees and greens, redesigned water features, and substantial changes to the third hole.
